Common questions in Roydon
Are there drone restrictions around Roydon?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Is my home in Roydon listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
What insurance do you have?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
Do you cover Roydon for drone roof surveys?
Yes. We carry out drone roof surveys in Roydon.
What happens after the survey?
You’ll get the report by email. With Standard there is a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Do I need to be at home?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We will talk about access as you book.
Can you survey in bad weather?
Light rain does not typically stop a survey. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so we will agree a new date if the weather isn’t suitable.
Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Roydon
The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We do not fly in high wind or heavy rain, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date. We check the forecast ahead of the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. If you’re worried about wind damage high on the roof and lead work pulling away at abutments, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Older buildings in small places like Roydon may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

How it works
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Somewhere like Roydon needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
- We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

What affects the price in Roydon
We confirm the price for the job before you book. This is what makes a difference:
- Which survey package you book
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- How big the roof is
A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both with VAT included. We confirm the price for your roof before you book.
What we need to know
If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
- The kind of building and roof involved
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
Most bookings start with a short call: ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will ask a few questions about the roof. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.
Different roofs, different checks
Large commercial roofs
Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor.
Valleys and parapet gutters
A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. It’s almost impossible to see from the ground, but it’s plain to see from the air.
Flying and imaging in Roydon
Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.
The streets around a church like St Peter's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. If you look after a building like Roydon Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

When you need someone else

- A structural engineer’s report
- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
