How a drone roof survey works in Gosfield

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It is also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. We’re often asked to look into eroded pointing on a chimney stack and debris building up in hidden gutters, across tall and steep roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and large and complex roofs.

Some older homes in villages like Gosfield are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

Tips from our surveys

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:

  • Keep pets indoors during the flight
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Move stored items away from the hatch
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions

Keep the photos with your property records. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys, and they help if you sell.

Keep the roof space ventilated. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation. Check insulation does not block the airflow.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Gosfield

Hedingham Castle, about 4 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Gosfield. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. Older buildings in Essex often have clay tiles and weatherboarding, alongside plenty of post-war and newer estates. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from the ground, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Catherine, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. If you look after a building like Gosfield Community Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Different roofs, different checks

Ridges and hips

Ridges may be bedded in mortar or mechanically fixed. Their condition is noted in the report.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. From above, we can see the linings, the joints and any debris.

What affects the price in Gosfield

Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. These are the things that affect it:

  • House, block, shop or office
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets

We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all including VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Getting in touch

There’s no need for technical words. Just tell us:

  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel

Gosfield: your questions answered

Will you come out to Gosfield?

Yes. Gosfield is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

Is drone flying allowed in Gosfield?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

What happens next?

The report arrives by email, with photos and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

How do I book a survey in Gosfield?

To book, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price and find a day that suits.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. If one is needed, the report says so.

What does a roof survey cost?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, inc. VAT.

Can I check my roof myself?

It’s useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

When you need someone else

No survey can tell you everything, and it’s better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you before you book. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Chimney stacks

The survey, step by step

On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you’d like to know. After that, we look at everything we can see safely, from ground level, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where it applies. Most surveys take an hour or two at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a hamlet or village like Gosfield, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
  • Leave side gates unlocked
