What a drone roof survey looks like in Hawbush Green
Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.
The streets around a church like Parish Church of All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

How a drone roof survey works in Hawbush Green
They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from ground level. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. Before the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. If you’ve noticed flashings that have come away and cracked mortar along the ridge, we can find out what’s behind it.
In a village or hamlet like Hawbush Green, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Weather and airspace are looked at ahead of the visit, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, with the urgent items made clear.

Checking the roof from ground level
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in.
What we do, step by step
The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there is safe access. In total, it takes an hour or two for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Cottages and farmhouses around Hawbush Green often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
- Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
How to prepare
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Note where any stains or damp appear
How to book
Most bookings start with a short call: call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will ask a few questions about the roof. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.
Advice
What we look for on each type of roof
Steep slate and tile slopes
Walking on fragile coverings can break them. A drone avoids that.
Large commercial roofs
Many commercial roofs have fragile sheets or roof lights. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.
Signs you need a drone roof survey in Hawbush Green
Not every roof can take a person’s weight. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Lead work pulling away at abutments
- Wind damage high on the roof
- Loose ridge and hip tiles
- Hidden gutters full of leaves
If you look after a building such as Cressing Primary School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.
Before you book anyone
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
- Are they insured for the work?
- How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone

Questions from Hawbush Green
Are there drone restrictions around Hawbush Green?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Will you come out to Hawbush Green?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.
When does the report arrive?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.
How long does the survey take?
It usually takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. The report follows by email.
Leave it or get it looked at?
It’s hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. Our report shows the condition of each area, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. That helps you put the work in order. For an older or listed building in a place like Hawbush Green, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
All our prices include VAT. Our price is from £400, including VAT. You will know the exact price before you book.

Tips that help
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:
- Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
- Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
There’s a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year.
Do not block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it is something only an inside check will show. Check insulation does not block the airflow.
