Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Coggeshall
The weather decides whether a drone can fly. Strong wind or a downpour rules out a flight, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the weather turns, we will agree another day or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. Common reasons to book are blocked valleys and parapet gutters and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, across chimney stacks, valleys and parapet gutters and fragile roofs.
Even in a smaller place like Coggeshall, there may be airfields or restrictions nearby, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Open ground can mean stronger wind, which also affects whether a small drone can fly. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

Questions from Coggeshall
Is drone flying allowed in Coggeshall?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
How do I find out if my home in Coggeshall is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
How fast do I get the report?
That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.
What will the report tell me?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photos throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.
Do you look in the roof space?
If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
What if it rains on the day?
Light rain is normally fine; heavy rain and wind are different. High wind or heavy rain can make access unsafe and ground a drone, so we’d move the date with you.
The survey, step by step
We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes between one and two hours for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. A visit to a smaller place like Coggeshall is no different on the day: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
- You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
- Keep pets in another room
How to book
Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To get started, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Related advice
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we check the roof.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.
Drones, thermal imaging and Coggeshall roofs
Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.
If you live in an older home near St Peter ad Vincula, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

Practical tips
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
- Let us know the exact address when booking
- Let us know what you want to see
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
There’s a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It shows whether anything has moved or worn since the first visit, and whether work has done its job.
Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.
When you need someone else
This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
- Flights in high wind or heavy rain
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What this survey covers
- Large and complex roofs
- Fragile roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Tall and steep roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Chimney stacks
Signs you need a drone roof survey in Coggeshall
Chimney tops take the worst of the weather. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are often invisible from below. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Wind damage high on the roof
- Hidden gutters full of leaves
- Ridge pieces that have lifted
- Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below
If you look after a building like Honywood Community Science School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
Before you book anyone
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- Whether VAT is added on top
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
