Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Surrex
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It’s also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, flat roofs on upper floors and tall and steep roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are blocked valleys and parapet gutters and coverings that have slipped high up on the roof.
In a small place like Surrex, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Tips that help
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
- Let us know about any leaks or concerns
- Shut pets inside while we fly
- Book early if you’re near an airport
You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to go through what the drone showed. It is a chance to ask about anything in the report.
Look at the roof from ground level after strong winds. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone survey can show what has shifted.

FAQs for Surrex
Will you come out to Surrex?
Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.
Is drone flying allowed in Surrex?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only if it is safe. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.
What will the report tell me?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, backed by photographs. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes. Photographs are part of every report.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with the building owner or managing agent. Let us know about it when you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.
How the survey works
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. The survey normally takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Older roofs in small places like Surrex can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
- We also look inside the roof space where it is safe.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

Do you need a drone roof survey in Surrex?
Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
- Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below
- Ridge and hip pieces working loose
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near St Peter ad Vincula, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

What we can’t see
It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
- Flights in high wind or heavy rain
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.

Drone roof surveys in Surrex: local notes
We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, while many towns grew with post-war and newer estates. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
Anyone responsible for a site like Honywood Community Science School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Layer Marney Tower lies about 5 miles south-east, so building around Surrex goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof itself.
Surrex is about 6 miles south-east of Halstead, in Essex. Bookings from Surrex are handled just like any other: a call or an email, a price, then a date. Surrex is one of the places in Essex where we work. For surveys nearby, see our Chelmsford page.
