What this survey can’t tell you

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:

  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll suggest the right survey. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

Drone roof survey in Ickham

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. Safety comes first on every visit. Common reasons to book are slipped or missing slates on a high roof and vegetation in valleys and gutters, on flat roofs on upper floors, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.

Villages like Ickham often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to.

Tips that help

You do not need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:

  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Check there is room outside for the drone to take off
  • Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions

Keep the photos with your property records. They give you something to compare against later, and they help if you sell.

Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, particularly in autumn. On high roofs, leave clearing to a professional. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.

Different roofs, different checks

Ridges and hips

Ridges may be bedded in mortar or mechanically fixed. Their condition is noted in the report.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.

FAQs for Ickham

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Ickham?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.

Is Ickham within the area you cover?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

When does the report arrive?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email.

What’s in the survey report?

Written findings with photos, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend, in order of urgency where relevant. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

Do you look in the roof space?

If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Tell us about it when booking and we will plan the survey around it.

How experienced are you?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.

What we do, step by step

The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit typically takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a hamlet or village like Ickham, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep pets in another room
  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Find any records of previous roof work

Can I check my roof myself?

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Ickham

Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.

If you live in an older home near Church of St John, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image. Goodnestone Park lies about 3 miles south-east, so building around Ickham goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof itself.

Ickham is about 4 miles east of Canterbury, in Kent. Surveys in Ickham work the same way as everywhere we cover: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. We cover towns and villages across Kent, large and small.

Further out, we also cover Canterbury (4 miles west), Margate (11 miles north-east), Dover (11 miles south-east), Folkestone (13 miles south), Ramsgate (11 miles north-east) and Broadstairs (12 miles north-east).

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Ickham

The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are frequently invisible from below. Close-up drone photos show their condition.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Loose ridge and hip tiles
  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof

Take a building like Wickhambreaux Church of England Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether VAT is added on top
  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection
