How a drone roof survey works in Much Hadham
Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs cannot always be inspected up close. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. We survey large and complex roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and tall and steep roofs, and people most frequently book us about loose ridge and hip tiles and chimney tops in poor condition.
In a small place like Much Hadham, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
The report records the roof as we found it on the day. It is useful right away, and a good reference for later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

Roof by roof
Valleys and parapet gutters
Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. A drone shows linings, joints and build-ups of debris.
Ridges and hips
Loose ridge pieces can be lifted in a storm. Spotting them early stops them falling.
Drone roof surveys around Much Hadham
Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from ground level, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.
Take a building like St Andrew's CofE Primary School and Nursery: big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once. The streets around a church such as Parish Church of St Andrew are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. With Much Hadham Palace about 0.2 miles north-east, the area around Much Hadham has a long history. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

What we do, step by step
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photos, sent to you by email. On timing, most surveys take between one and two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. For a village or hamlet like Much Hadham, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
- Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Keep pets in another room

Related advice
Checking the roof from ground level
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Practical tips
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:
- Move stored items away from the hatch
- Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
- Let us know the exact address as you book
- Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
Premium also includes a 12-month follow-up. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year.
Do not block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up, and it is something only an inside check will show. Check insulation doesn’t block the airflow.
Common questions in Much Hadham
Are there drone restrictions around Much Hadham?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
How do I find out if my home in Much Hadham is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Does someone need to be in?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
Do you cover Much Hadham for drone roof surveys?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, Much Hadham included.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and the report uses them to show each finding alongside our recommendations.
