Drone roof survey in Nether Street: what you get

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports like Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. Common reasons to book are ridge and hip pieces working loose and flat roofs on upper floors that hold water, across fragile roofs, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.

Villages like Nether Street frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Nether Street

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in, at a time agreed in advance. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which helps when tenants work during the week.

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, including offices, shops and units. Bigger roofs take more time.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Nether Street

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Nether Street?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Is drone flying allowed in Nether Street?

Normally it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.

Does the report include photographs?

Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, so you can see what we mean.

Do you need to get into the loft?

If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.

What do I do with the report?

You’ll receive the report by email, and you decide the next step: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.

Do I need to be at home?

Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you when booking.

What if it rains on the day?

Some surveys depend on the weather more than others. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof and little wind. We’ll rearrange with you if the weather isn’t right.

Honest limits

In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you before booking. What a survey covers and does not.

What this survey covers

  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks

How the survey changes by roof type

Chimney stacks

Leaning stacks and loose pots are easier to judge from above. Each defect is photographed for the report.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roof coverings wear out at different rates. Photos show how the covering is wearing.

Checking the roof from the ground

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

What we do, step by step

We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In a hamlet or village like Nether Street, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it before the visit.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
  • Note where any stains or damp appear

Common roof problems in Nether Street

The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. From ground level, you rarely see cracked flaunching or loose pots. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
  • Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below
  • Flashings that have come away
  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters

Historic houses such as Much Hadham Palace, about 2.3 miles north, show how far back building around Nether Street goes. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.

Before you book anyone

  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof

What’s in a roof survey

What a drone roof survey looks like in Nether Street

Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.

Anyone responsible for a site like Widford School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. The streets around a church such as Parish Church of St John the Baptist are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.
