Your questions about drone roof surveys in Hunsdon

Is drone flying allowed in Hunsdon?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

How do I find out if my home in Hunsdon is listed?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Are you structural engineers?

No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report, and it does not include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.

What does the report include?

It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photos throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too, so you know exactly what was covered.

Drone roof survey in Hunsdon

From the air, the outer surfaces are clear, but it can’t see inside. We check the loft from inside where it’s safe, because the underside tells its own story. Together, the two give a fuller picture. The report sets out what the drone showed and what we found inside. If there’s no safe loft access, the report says so. We survey tall and steep roofs, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors, and the problems we are asked to look at most are chimney tops in poor condition and ridge and hip pieces working loose.

In a small place like Hunsdon, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Hunsdon

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with the building owner or managing agent. Let us know about it when you book and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.

With a portfolio of properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To discuss a number of properties, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

What this survey can’t tell you

To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we check

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks
  • Tall and steep roofs

What we’re asked to look at in Hunsdon

Large roofs take a long time to see on foot. The drone covers the surface area by area, showing patterns of wear that are hard to spot up close. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.

We are frequently asked to look at:

  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Ridge and hip pieces working loose

If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St Francis Chapel, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

What to check before booking

  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • When you will get the report
  • Are they insured for the work?
  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours

What’s in a roof survey

What we do, step by step

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Somewhere as small as Hunsdon, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
  • Leave side gates unlocked

Arrange a survey

Most bookings start with a short call: call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

What we look for on each type of roof

Large commercial roofs

Many commercial roofs have fragile sheets or roof lights. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.

Chimney stacks

Leaning stacks and loose pots are easier to judge from above. Each defect is photographed for the report.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Planning roof work without seeing the roof is a gamble. You get photographs of every part we can see, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. You can tackle the urgent items first. Outbuildings and barns around Hunsdon are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Prices start from £150, inc. VAT, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both with VAT included. We confirm the price for the job before you book.
