How a drone roof survey works in Stone Cross

Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs can’t always be inspected up close. A drone takes close-up photos of those roofs from the air. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly. Everything we find goes into a report with photographs. It’s also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. We survey tall and steep roofs, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors, and people most frequently book us about vegetation in valleys and gutters and blocked valleys and parapet gutters.

In smaller places like Stone Cross, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from ground level. The parts you cannot see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. The forecast decides the day. Even so, a close-up image frequently shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from ground level misses.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

Questions from Stone Cross

Is drone flying allowed in Stone Cross?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Stone Cross?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, as long as access is agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

Do you cover Stone Cross?

Yes. Stone Cross is part of the area we cover.

Do you need to get into the loft?

Normally, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days as you book.

What this survey cannot tell you

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs

How it works

We will ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes an hour or two for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Parking around Stone Cross is typically easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from the ground, with the loft showing the underside, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where it applies.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Before and after the survey

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:

  • Check there is room outside for the drone to take off
  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Let us know about any leaks or concerns
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather

With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible, alongside the other checks in the package.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, and early repairs keep water out.

Checking the roof from the ground

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Drone roof surveys around Stone Cross

Stone Cross is within about 3 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

With Michelham Priory about 4.8 miles north-west, the area around Stone Cross has a long history. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof itself. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St Luke's Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Stone Cross School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

What we look for on each type of roof

Steep slate and tile slopes

On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. We can see the extent of it from above.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Some older terraces have a butterfly roof with a valley in the middle. It’s almost impossible to see from the ground, but a drone shows it clearly.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Photos from a drone survey show how the roof looks today. Comparing them with later photos shows what has changed. It helps when you plan ahead. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like Stone Cross, so it helps to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. Knowing early gives you time to get the right people in.

Prices start from £150, including VAT, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both including VAT. You will know the price for your roof before booking.
