Drone roof survey in Hastings: what you get
Our drone weighs under 250g, and we are a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. We never fly where it is not safe. We’re often asked to look into ponding and splits on a high flat roof and slates or tiles shifted by high winds, on tall and steep roofs, chimney stacks and valleys and parapet gutters.
Taller buildings, steep roofs and large commercial roofs are common in places the size of Hastings, and many cannot be seen properly from ground level. Close-up drone photos and thermal images each show something a ground-level look can miss. The right tool depends on the roof and what you need to know. Both depend on the weather on the day.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Common roof problems in Hastings
Parapet gutters, box gutters and central valleys sit out of sight. Debris collects where nobody looks, until water overflows inside. From above, they’re easy to see.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Lifted or split lead flashings
- Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
- Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
For hotels and guest houses around Hastings, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest, so it’s worth knowing the roof’s condition.

DIY checks: what’s safe
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
How we price drone roof surveys
To price your survey, we look at:
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- Which survey package you book
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.
Helping us price your survey
If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Your timetable, such as an exchange date
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the survey around it.
Drone roof surveys in Hastings: local notes
Hastings is within about 2 miles of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.
If you run a business near Priory Meadow Shopping Centre, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Paul's Church of England Academy, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
Hastings is in East Sussex. In Hastings, as across East Sussex, every roof gets the same careful survey. Our area takes in places right across East Sussex, large and small. Maidstone is in our area too.

Different roofs, different checks
Valleys and parapet gutters
Valleys and parapet gutters are hidden from the street. A drone shows linings, joints and build-ups of debris.
Chimney stacks
From the air, a lean or a loose pot is easy to see. Each defect is photographed for the report.
How the survey works
You do not need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll get on with the inspection. A typical survey takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In Hastings, we survey everything from flats and houses to commercial buildings. Each building type brings its own access questions, from shared stairwells to locked plant rooms. Surveys can be booked for any day of the week.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
- If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Check we can get to the back of the property
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
How to book
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine. To send them or to book, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Advice
Hastings questions
Is my home in Hastings listed or in a conservation area?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Are there drone restrictions around Hastings?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys run seven days a week. To arrange a date, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
Does the weather affect the survey?
It can, depending on the survey. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. We will rearrange with you if the weather isn’t right.
Do I need to be at home?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that ahead of time, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it does not include calculations. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.
