Thermal roof surveys near Hastings

Airspace, weather and Hastings roofs

The coast is about 2 miles or less from Hastings. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

Hotels and guest houses near Hastings can’t easily close rooms for a leak, so it pays to find faults before guests do. If you look after a building such as St Paul's Church of England Academy, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. The streets around a church such as St Luke's Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

How a thermal roof survey works in Hastings

A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. The camera doesn’t see water itself, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. If you’ve noticed missing or slipped insulation and cold areas below the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

In a place the size of Hastings, plenty of roofs are tall, steep or very large, and many cannot be seen properly from ground level. A drone gives close-up photos, while thermal imaging can show patterns that point to trapped moisture or missing insulation. Which suits depends on the question you need answering. The weather decides the day for both.

Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

How we price thermal roof surveys

Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. This is what makes a difference:

  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • Roof area
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Helping us price your survey

What helps most when you contact us:

  • Anything about access we should know
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat

When you are ready to go ahead, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. From there it is a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day.

What happens on the day

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes about one to two hours at a typical home, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. If the property is near the centre of Hastings, let us know about car parks or permit rules nearby. We will want to see the loft, if there is one, and any ceiling or wall showing damp. Outside, we work round the building to find the safe viewpoints.

  1. First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
  2. We look at the roof from the ground, from windows and from the roof itself where it is safe.
  3. A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
  4. We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there is safe access.
  5. We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of

Honest limits

Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations
  • Confirming water without moisture readings

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will suggest the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Commercial roofs
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Loft conversions
  • Flat roofs

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Hastings

Is there anything to prepare before you come to Hastings?

Not much. Unlock side gates, keep pets in another room and dig out any invoices from past roof work.

Is Hastings in the area you cover?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and Hastings is part of that. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a few details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach.

How long is the visit?

Expect it to take about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. The written report follows by email.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.

Will I get photos?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, which makes the report easy to follow.

Roof by roof

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Even on pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp. We explain what can and cannot be read from them.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

When valley or parapet gutters overflow, water can get into walls and ceilings. Thermal images, checked with moisture readings, can help trace it.

For landlords and managing agents

Landlords, agents and building managers in Hastings and across East Sussex can book any of our surveys. For a price for a let property or a block, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf. Access is agreed with the tenant ahead of time.

Practical tips

You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • File the images with your roof records
  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
  • Note where damp appears and after what weather
  • Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting

We note the weather and surface conditions, and how they may have affected the results. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.

Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.
