Thermal roof surveys in Polegate and the rest of East Sussex. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends.
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
- Stains that keep coming back
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
About our thermal roof survey in Polegate
A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated areas can stand out on the images. The difference shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and cold outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. We don’t give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. We survey pitched roof slopes, ceilings below the roof and flat roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are wet areas near outlets and upstands and cold areas below the roof.
Around Polegate, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

FAQs for Polegate
How do I find out if my home in Polegate is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you cover Polegate?
Yes, Polegate is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.
Will the camera show exactly where the water is?
No, not on its own. It shows surface temperature, and wet areas can show up because they hold heat differently. That’s why we check any patterns with moisture readings.
How fast do I get the report?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.
What does a thermal roof survey show?
The camera records how the surface temperature varies. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or heat escaping. We check what it shows with moisture readings.

When to book a survey in Polegate
Once a leak has been fixed, people often ask whether the roof is still wet. A thermal survey with moisture readings can show whether wet areas remain, given suitable conditions on the day.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Water that travels before it shows
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Missing or slipped insulation
If you look after a building like Polegate Primary School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.
What to check before booking
- Is VAT included in the price?
- What happens after the report arrives
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
Flying and imaging in Polegate
Polegate lies within about 4 miles of the sea. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings, alongside oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
For an older house near a landmark such as St John's Church of England Church, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps. Michelham Priory lies about 3.2 miles north-west, so building around Polegate goes back a long way. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.
Polegate is about 3 miles south of Hailsham, in East Sussex. In Polegate, as across East Sussex, every roof gets the same careful survey. Across East Sussex, we cover Polegate. There is also a page for Brighton.

Prices for thermal roof surveys in Polegate
Prices always include VAT. What changes the price is:
- The shape of the roof and its details
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- The size of the roof
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.
What we need to know
If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
We confirm the price for the job before you book, so you know the cost up front. Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. To book, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.
What we look for on each type of roof
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Slate and tile roofs are often harder to read with a thermal camera, because of the air space beneath. We back up what the camera shows with a look in the loft where we can.
Loft insulation
Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. The camera can show where it no longer covers the ceiling.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
How the survey works
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for most houses, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Polegate, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Mention any side of the property we can’t get to. Inside, the loft is looked at where it can be reached safely.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- We check the roof from the ground, from windows and from the roof itself where it is safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.
How to prepare
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
- Leave a clear route to the loft
How to book
A quick phone call is usually the easiest start: call 07833 053749 or email us, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.
Advice
Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Don’t switch the heating off ahead of the visit
- Keep a record of when stains appear
- Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
- Use the report as a baseline for later checks
If the images suggest moisture that can’t be confirmed, we will say what would help next, such as electronic leak detection or opening up a small area.
After repairs or a new covering, a later survey can confirm things are dry in suitable weather.
