Burlow New Roof Snagging
Checking a new or replacement roof for snags for Burlow, from an experienced roof surveyor. You get a clear written report with photographs.
- Verge tiles or slates not secured
- Underlay ending short at the eaves
- Cracked mortar at the ridge or hips
How new roof snagging works in Burlow
We check the coverings, ridges, verges, hips and valleys, along with the flashings and ventilation. We check the underlay at the eaves where it’s visible as well as the gutters. The report sets out what we found with photos. We also note debris left behind and any damage to other parts of the building. If you’re worried about loose flashings at walls or chimneys and cracked lower roofs or marked walls after the work, we can find out what’s behind it.
Somewhere as small as Burlow, older cottages, farmhouses and converted buildings often sit beside a few newer homes. Village roofs can be clay tile, slate, stone or even thatch on some older buildings. Whether you are buying or have just had a roof replaced, each material has its own checks, and thatch is a specialist material, so we report on what can be seen. What’s under the coverings, from old felt to the battens and nails, matters too.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work.
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait.
Local roofs and buyers in Burlow
In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Whether you are buying or checking new roofing work, knowing the materials helps make sense of what the inspection finds. Horselunges Manor, about 2.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Burlow. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

What we cannot see
It’s useful to know what a survey will not do before you book:
- Settling a dispute with your roofer or builder
- Fixings and underlay hidden under the coverings
- Parts of the roof we cannot see safely
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you before booking. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Ridges and verges
- New flat roofs
- Replacement roofs
- Loft conversions and dormers
- Flashings and valleys
- New-build homes
How it works
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you need to know. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where it applies. The survey typically takes an hour or two for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. In a hamlet or village like Burlow, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We start with what the roofer did and when they finished.
- We check the coverings, ridges, hips and verges from safe vantage points.
- Valleys, flashings, gutters and visible underlay at the eaves are checked.
- The roof space and the rest of the property are checked for problems.
- You get a photo report of each snag.
Preparing for the visit
- Check we can get to the back of the property
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Leave it or get it looked at?
Phone photos from the garden cannot show much. Our inspection looks as closely as can be done safely, including by drone where it’s applicable. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you’d like to know.

Common roof problems in Burlow
Flashings are a common source of snags. If they’re poorly dressed or fixed, water can get in sooner rather than later.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Ridge and hip tiles not properly fixed
- Gaps at new flashings
- Cracked lower roofs or marked walls after the work
- Poorly finished verges
The streets around a church such as Christ Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, a survey will show how the roof has been repaired before, which helps you judge what’s coming.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- What they won’t be able to tell you
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
DIY checks: what’s safe
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
