Common questions in Burlow

Is Burlow within the area you cover?

Yes, Burlow is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Is my home in Burlow listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends. To arrange a date, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.

How long does a drone roof survey take?

It typically takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. That includes the checks before the drone goes up.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The flight waits for better weather. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so we’d move the date with you.

Drone roof survey in Burlow

From the air, the outer surfaces are clear, but it can’t see under the coverings or into the loft. Where there’s safe access, we look in the roof space too, since that’s where leaks and condensation often show first. Together, the two give a fuller picture. The report sets out what the drone showed and what we found inside. Where the loft cannot be reached safely, we note it. Typical surveys look at moss and weeds taking hold up top and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings, on chimney stacks, fragile roofs and tall and steep roofs.

In a village or hamlet like Burlow, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned in advance. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It’s useful straight away, and a good reference for later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

Different roofs, different checks

Ridges and hips

Ridges and hips are the most exposed parts of a pitched roof. From above, we can see loose ridges and missing mortar.

Valleys and parapet gutters

A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. It is almost impossible to see from the ground, but it is plain to see from the air.

Checking the roof from ground level

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

What a survey costs

All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Roof area
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own

Every price we give includes VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Prices start from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Booking your survey

Getting the details right at the start saves time. Please include:

  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Anything about access we should know
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window

You can call us seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. To book or ask a question, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Tips that help

You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • Move stored items away from the hatch
  • Tell us about any leaks or concerns
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns

You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to go through what the drone showed. You can ask about anything that isn’t clear.

Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.

Drone roof surveys around Burlow

Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.

Historic houses such as Horselunges Manor, about 2.8 miles south, show how far back building around Burlow goes. For older roofs nearby, a look from the air or with a thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition. If you live in an older home near Christ Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

How it works

Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey normally takes an hour or two for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Rural addresses near Burlow can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Getting a price

Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, and you can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email to find out.

Honest limits

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying
  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and does not.
