Gun Hill Drone Roof Survey

  • Plant growth and moss on the roof
  • Ridge and hip pieces working loose
  • Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below

What we look for on each type of roof

Large commercial roofs

Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.

Chimney stacks

From the air, a lean or a loose pot is easy to see. Each defect is photographed for the report.

How a drone roof survey works in Gun Hill

They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from ground level. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or isn’t safe. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. We check the airspace for your address before the visit. We will tell you if another approach would work better. We survey tall and steep roofs, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are storm damage on steep or tall roofs and slipped or missing slates on a high roof.

Older buildings in small places like Gun Hill may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

What happens on the day

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. All told, expect between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. For a village or hamlet like Gun Hill, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

Common roof problems in Gun Hill

Not every roof can take a person’s weight. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
  • Cracked mortar along the ridge
  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
  • Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots

In and around Gun Hill, as anywhere, a roof is easiest to deal with when its problems are found early.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • How soon the report will arrive
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • What insurance they carry

Gun Hill questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Gun Hill?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Do you cover smaller places like Gun Hill?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

What’s in the survey report?

A written report with photographs, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend, with the most urgent first where relevant. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

What’s the best way to book?

It’s easiest to ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. Give us the address and some details about the roof. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

What if my home is near an airport?

That depends on where the roof is. Inside a flight restriction zone, we need permission first, which can add time. Book early if you think you may be affected.

What insurance do you have?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

How soon will I get the report?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.

Drones, thermal imaging and Gun Hill roofs

Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.

With Horselunges Manor about 1.9 miles south-east, the area around Gun Hill has a long history. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.

Gun Hill is about 3 miles north-west of Hailsham, in East Sussex. We carry out drone roof surveys for householders, landlords and businesses in Gun Hill and the surrounding area. Across East Sussex, we cover Gun Hill and the places around it. There is also a page for Brighton.

Neighbouring places we cover for drone roof surveys include Hale Green (1 mile west), Muddles Green (1 mile south-west), Burlow (1 mile north-east), Horam (2 miles north-east) and Lions Green (2 miles north). What affects the price in Gun Hill

Survey packages start from £150, inc. VAT. The price for your roof depends on:

  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
  • How big the roof is
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

What we need to know

You don’t need to know any roofing terms. It’s enough to tell us:

  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • The kind of building and roof involved

Every survey is priced before it’s booked, so you know where you stand. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. To book, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Useful tips for Gun Hill property owners

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. Our suggestions:

  • Book early if you are near an airport
  • Tell us about any leaks or concerns
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit

File the report and photos with your home documents. They give you something to compare against later.

Look at the roof from the ground after strong winds. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone survey can show what has shifted.
