Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Thorley Street
We survey roofs in Thorley Street and across London and South East England. We carry out surveys on weekdays and at weekends. We’re insured for professional indemnity and public liability, and bring 20+ years’ experience. Each survey ends with a written report, emailed with photographs and recommendations. Houses, flats and commercial buildings all follow the same careful process. To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Common reasons to book are flashings that have come away from the wall and torn or sagging underlay, on chimney stacks, natural slate and clay and concrete tiles.
Village roofs frequently face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Roof surveys in Thorley Street: local notes
Thorley Street is within about 2 miles of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. Some villages on the Isle of Wight still have thatched roofs, and sea air and wind reach every part of the island. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
If you live in an older home near St. Swithin's Church, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. Historic houses such as Mottistone Manor, about 3.4 miles south-east, show how far back building around Thorley Street goes. Older homes in the area may have roofs that need matching materials when work is done.

Your questions about roof surveys in Thorley Street
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Thorley Street?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Will you come out to Thorley Street?
Yes. Thorley Street is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.
Can you tell me how long my roof will last?
We do not put a figure on it, since the fixings, underlay and maintenance all play a part. Instead, we set out what’s sound, what’s wearing and what to do first.
When will the report arrive?
That depends on which survey you choose: Basic within 48 hours, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Premium the same day. We send it by email.
Is your survey a structural engineer’s report?
No. Our survey looks at the condition of the roof, and Standard and Premium include structural checks. It doesn’t include structural calculations, which need an engineer.
How long will you be at the property?
It typically takes about 1–2 hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. The report follows within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Do you inspect the roof from on top?
Only where it is safe to do so. We also inspect from the ground, from windows and vantage points, and from the loft. On Premium, a drone is used where it applies.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Thorley Street
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on.
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, from shops and offices to industrial units. Bigger roofs take more time, so they’re priced to suit.
Honest limits
We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:
- Defects hidden under coverings or inside walls without opening up
- An exact number of years the roof has left
- Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets
If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What this survey covers
- Chimney stacks
- The roof space
- Lead flashings
- Ridges, hips and valleys
- Natural slate
- Clay and concrete tiles
- Flat roofs
How the survey changes by roof type
Concrete interlocking tiles
Ridge and verge mortar on concrete tile roofs can crack and fall away. We check for loose ridge tiles and missing mortar.
Chimney stacks
Damp on a chimney breast inside often starts with the stack outside. We check the flashings and mortar for the cause.
Why get it checked now?
Before you put a home on the market, it’s useful to know the roof’s condition. You can deal with defects before a buyer’s surveyor finds them. For older village homes like those around Thorley Street, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
Prices start from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included.

Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
