Roof surveys across the Isle of Wight: what to expect
Our roof survey gives you a clear picture of your roof’s condition. Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all checked, and the roof space where there is safe access. You get a written report with photos and recommendations. Where it helps, we say which items are urgent and which can wait. Typical surveys look at gutters that overflow in heavy rain and torn or sagging underlay, across chimney stacks, clay and concrete tiles and lead flashings.
The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. All told, expect an hour or two for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are.
- You tell us the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- Outside, we inspect from the ground, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
- Inside, we check the roof space where there’s safe access.
- You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.

Near you in Newport
Around Newport, our work takes us to homes and buildings near Seaclose Park, Castle Inn and Island Innovation VI Form Campus and the streets around them. Nearby too are Christ The King College (0.6 miles south-west) and Nine Acres Primary School (less than half a mile south). Other landmarks nearby include Carisbrooke Castle (1 mile south-west) and St Mary's Hospital (0.8 miles north). Not far away are Briddlesford Nature Reserve and Mill Hill.
Roof surveys across the Isle of Wight: local notes
From Newport, Ryde and Cowes to smaller places, people across the Isle of Wight use a roof survey to plan ahead. A report helps you sort small faults before they let water in.
We work right across London and the South East, from the Isle of Wight to Hertfordshire, and the Isle of Wight is well within that. Visits run on weekdays and at weekends. Near the coast in the Isle of Wight, wind can be strong, and a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. Driving rain and salt air are hard on roofs there too.
Newport: Carisbrooke Castle, about 1 mile south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Newport. Older homes in the area may have roofs that need matching materials when work is done. If you live near a park like Seaclose Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Leaving it means relying on what you can see from the ground. You might pay for work that does not fix the real problem, or miss the fault that matters. A survey tells you what actually needs attention.

Different roofs, different checks
Natural slate
From the loft, we check the underside of a slate roof. Older roofs may have bitumen felt underlay, and very old roofs none.
Flat roof coverings
Felt flat roofs frequently last around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. We look at how the covering is wearing.
What affects the price in the Isle of Wight
Prices always include VAT. What changes the price is:
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- The shape of the roof and its details
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
What we need to know
These details help when you contact us:
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- What made you get in touch
- The property’s address and postcode
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
To book a survey, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and what you’d like to know about the roof. We’ll confirm the price before booking.
Checking the roof from ground level
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
Honest limits
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
- Walls, floors and services below the roof
- Faults hidden behind ceilings or boarding
FAQs for the Isle of Wight
Can you inspect a terraced or semi-detached roof?
Yes, the part you own or can give access to. Next door’s roof is only inspected as far as we can see it. Shared stacks and upstands are looked at from your property.
What if it rains on the day?
It can, depending on the survey. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof and little wind. We will rearrange with you if the weather isn’t right.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. We look at the parts we’re given access to.
Can you tell me how long my roof will last?
Not as an exact number, since the fixings, underlay and maintenance all play a part. Instead, we set out what’s sound, what’s wearing and what to do first.
When will the report arrive?
It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Premium the same day. It is emailed to you.
Is a roof survey the same as a structural survey?
No. Where we see something that needs a structural engineer, the report says so. We do not provide structural calculations.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
