How a roof survey works in Shide
We inspect what can be seen safely: from ground level, from windows, from the roof space and from the roof where conditions allow. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging and, where it applies, a drone, for roofs that are hard to see well. All we need from you is access to the property and the loft. Everything we see is photographed for the report. We survey ridges, hips and valleys, clay and concrete tiles and natural slate, and common reasons people get in touch are leaning or weathered chimney stacks and water stains on rafters and ceiling joists.
Around Shide, older cottages sit alongside bungalows and newer houses. Older roofs can have slate, clay tiles or other traditional coverings, while many later ones have concrete tiles. Chimneys, valleys and gutters on older homes frequently need the most attention, and the fixings under the coverings matter too. The fixings under an older roof frequently fail before good slates or tiles do.
It is not only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

DIY checks: what’s safe
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Roof surveys around Shide
Shide is within about 5 miles of the coast, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles. Carisbrooke Castle, about 1 mile west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Shide. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs.
Trees in and around Seaclose Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. Take an older house close to Church of St. John the Baptist: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. If you look after a building such as Nine Acres Primary School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.
Shide is about 1 mile south-east of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. Whether the building in Shide is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Across the Isle of Wight, we cover Shide and the places around it. You can also see our page for Portsmouth.

Prices for roof surveys in Shide
A few things affect what a survey costs:
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- Basic, Standard or Premium
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.
Booking your survey
You don’t need to know any roofing terms. It’s enough to let us know:
- When you need the report by
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- The property’s address and postcode
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
Most bookings start with a short call: phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form, and we will ask about the building and what you need. You will have a price before anything is arranged.
What we do, step by step
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about one to two hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Homes around Shide often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Mention any side of the property we cannot get to. The loft, where there is safe access, completes the picture.
- You let us know about the property and any concerns.
- We agree a date, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- The roof is inspected from the ground, windows, the loft and the roof itself where it’s safe.
- Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all examined and photographed.
- We email a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations.

Advice
How the survey changes by roof type
Clay plain and peg tiles
Clay tiles are common on older South East homes. When pegs or battens rot, tiles slip, leaving gaps along the courses.
Chimney stacks
Our chimney check is a visual inspection of the stack, and it is not a flue or gas safety check. We will tell you if the flue needs a specialist.
Surveys for landlords and agents in Shide
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant, which helps with budgets and planning.
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.
Tips that help
There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Include dormers, porches and garages when you book
- Have details of recent roof work to hand
- Check we can open the loft hatch
- Hold on to the report for future surveys
With the Standard Survey you get a follow-up consultation, while Premium includes a consultation in person. You can ask us about anything that is not clear.
Plan a roof survey every few years, or sooner after severe weather. Regular checks catch problems while they’re small. Compare each report with the last.

Your questions about roof surveys in Shide
Is Shide within the area you cover?
Yes, Shide is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.
Does being near the coast affect roofs in Shide?
It can do. Shide is within about 5 miles of the sea, and coastal roofs tend to see faster wear on metal parts and more wind lifting loose pieces.
What insurance do you have?
Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.
Do you go up on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Many roofs can be seen well from windows, vantage points and the loft.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Where it’s relevant to the survey and there’s safe access, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch.
Can you look at a roof that is joined to next door?
Yes. We inspect what the owner gives us access to. If a problem seems to come from next door, we’ll say so.
How do I book a survey in Shide?
