How a roof survey works in PO40
The report is written for you, in plain language. Every issue comes with photos and a written recommendation, and where it is relevant we say what’s urgent and what can wait. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, a drone where applicable and a same-day report. Each report is emailed to you. We survey chimney stacks, ridges, hips and valleys and clay and concrete tiles, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are crumbling chimney pointing or cracked flaunching and gutters that overflow in heavy rain.
The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Notes and photographs go into the written report. The visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer.
- You get in touch with the address and anything you’ve noticed.
- A visit is booked for a weekday or a weekend.
- The roof is inspected from the ground, windows, the loft and the roof itself where it’s safe.
- We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, and photograph what we find.
- Your report arrives by email, with recommendations prioritised by urgency.
How our prices work

We work in homes and buildings around The Red Lion pub, All Saints' Church and All Saints Church of England Primary School. Roof surveys across PO40: local notes
From Freshwater, Totland and Easton to its smaller places, buildings across PO40 have roofs of every age. Chimneys, valleys, flashings and gutters are normally where the work is.
Even in the South East, autumn and winter storms find any loose slate, tile or ridge. In PO40, as elsewhere, exposed details are where damage shows first. Near the sea in PO40, roofs face stronger wind and salt-laden air, and metal fixings and lead suffer for it. Ridges and verges facing the sea are worth checking after every big storm.
Freshwater: For site and facilities teams at buildings like All Saints Church of England Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near All Saints' Church, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Roof faults rarely stay the same size. A single gap lets water onto the timbers underneath, and damp timber slowly weakens. Finding it early keeps the work smaller.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether VAT is added on top
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Their report turnaround times
What affects the price in PO40
What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. The main factors are:
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
- Height and safe access
Prices start from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can be seen safely and which survey you book.
Booking your survey
A little information up front helps. Please include:
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- The kind of building and roof involved
- Dates you are working to, such as exchange

How the survey changes by roof type
Concrete interlocking tiles
Many post-war houses have concrete interlocking tiles. They last well, but their surface erodes slowly.
Clay plain and peg tiles
Handmade and machine-made clay tiles are long-lasting. Slipped, cracked and missing tiles are recorded.
Honest limits
Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Walls, floors and services below the roof
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
Can I check my roof myself?
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Common questions in PO40
Is your survey a structural engineer’s report?
No. We report on the roof’s condition, and the Standard and Premium packages include a structural check. It does not include structural calculations, which need an engineer.
Do you carry out asbestos surveys?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. Where materials might contain it, we say so in the report and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Do you cover PO40?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, PO40 included.
What do you check on a roof survey?
Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all checked, along with the loft where it’s safe. The report includes photos and recommendations.
Do you inspect the roof from on top?
Where it is safe, yes. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the roof space. On Premium, a drone is used where it applies.
What’s the best way to book?
To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know the address and what you need to know. We will confirm the price and find a day that suits.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.
