Thermal roof survey in Freshwater

A thermal survey is not a quick fix for every roof problem. Sun, shade, reflective surfaces and wind can all change what the camera shows. That is why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. The report is clear about what the images show and what they don’t. Where something can’t be confirmed, we say what would help next. If you’ve noticed damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys and areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions, we can find out what’s behind it.

Even in a smaller place like Freshwater, there may be airfields or restrictions nearby, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind. Each flight is planned with neighbours’ privacy in mind, as well as the airspace and the wind.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Why act early in Freshwater

A poorly insulated roof loses heat year after year. The camera can point to gaps and thin areas in the insulation, so you know where to put things right. Around Freshwater, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, and that is a much bigger job than the original defect.

To find out what your survey will cost, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and tell us about the roof. We will confirm the figure before booking.

Why book us in Freshwater

  • We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • Thermal imaging and drones used where they help
  • Every finding written up with photos
  • An independent view of the roof

Freshwater questions

How do I find out if my home in Freshwater is listed?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Will you come out to Freshwater?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

How many surveys have you done?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it is applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?

No, not on its own. It shows surface temperature, and wet areas can show up because they hold heat differently. We confirm what it suggests with moisture readings.

Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?

Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, if the building owner or managing agent agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to, and the report makes that clear.

How the survey works

When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. After that, we look at everything we can see safely, from ground level, from windows, in the loft space and by drone where it applies. Most surveys take about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Parking around Freshwater is normally easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.

  1. First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can safely be seen.
  3. Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
  4. We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
  5. You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

When to book a survey in Freshwater

Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Damp patches with no obvious cause
  • Gaps in loft insulation
  • Leaks that are hard to trace
  • Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering

The streets around a church such as All Saints' Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • Will the report include photos?
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • Are they insured for the work?
  • What happens after the report arrives

What’s in a roof survey

How we price thermal roof surveys

To price your survey, we look at:

  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
  • How big the roof is
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight

One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Booking your survey

To price your survey accurately, we’ll ask about:

  • Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Anything about access we should know
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors

We survey roofs on weekdays and at weekends. To find a date that works for you, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and the days you’d prefer.

Thermal roof surveys in Freshwater: local notes

Freshwater is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. A number of the island’s villages keep thatched roofs on older buildings, and the whole island is open to sea air and wind. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.

With Mottistone Manor about 4.6 miles south-east, the area around Freshwater has a long history. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. For site and facilities teams at buildings like All Saints Church of England Primary School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.

Freshwater is about 5 miles south of Lymington, in the Isle of Wight. If you’re in Freshwater, booking works exactly as it does anywhere else: get in touch, agree the price and pick a day. Our the Isle of Wight coverage includes Freshwater. For surveys nearby, see our Southampton page.

Surveys in PO40 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Streets in the area include Dall Square, High Street and The Square, all of which we cover. Neighbouring places we cover for thermal roof surveys include Easton (1 mile south-east), Colwell (1 mile north-west), Norton Green (1 mile north), Afton (1 mile south-east) and Totland (1 mile west). Further out, we also cover Newport (10 miles east), Cowes (11 miles north-east), Shanklin (15 miles east), Ventnor (15 miles south-east), East Cowes (12 miles north-east) and Barton (10 miles east). For harder-to-reach addresses, a little more planning is needed, so let us know when you contact us.

Before and after the survey

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. Our suggestions:

  • Use the report as a baseline for later checks
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Heat the home normally on the days before
  • Note where damp appears and after what weather

Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Each thermal image is matched to a normal photo, so the areas are easy to locate.

Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.
