About our drone roof survey in Freshwater
From the air, the outer surfaces are clear, but it cannot see under the coverings or into the loft. We check the loft from inside where it is safe, because the underside tells its own story. Inside and out together tell you far more. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. If there is no safe loft access, the report says so. We survey tall and steep roofs, large and complex roofs and chimney stacks, and common reasons people get in touch are cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots and coverings that have slipped high up on the roof.
Around Freshwater, lots of roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. The parts you cannot see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. Both depend on the weather on the day. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that can’t be judged properly from the ground.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover
Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey will not do:
- Close-up photos of next door’s property
- Flights in strong wind or heavy rain
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.
What this survey covers
- Fragile roofs
- Tall and steep roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Large and complex roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Valleys and parapet gutters
What affects the price in Freshwater
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:
- Whether it is a home or a commercial building
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- The roof’s overall size
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, including VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
Getting in touch
If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:

- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
To book a survey, ring 07833 053749 or email us and let us know the address and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price before you book.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Freshwater
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait.
Any of our surveys can be booked by landlords, agents and building managers in Freshwater. For a price for a let property or a block, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
What you can safely check yourself
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
It is useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
What happens on the day
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. It usually takes about one to two hours at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Freshwater, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Mention any side of the property we cannot get to. The loft, where there’s safe access, completes the picture.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
- The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
- Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
- You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
Book a survey
Booking is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or email us, let us know about the property and we will suggest the right survey. The price is agreed up front.
Advice
Your questions about drone roof surveys in Freshwater
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Freshwater?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Will you come out to Freshwater?
Yes, Freshwater is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Do drone rules differ in central London?
Central London has restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs, and flights there need NATS permission. We check before every flight and seek permission where needed.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but we don’t provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. If one is needed, the report says so.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
How fast do I get the report?
That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. Reports are sent by email.
Airspace, weather and Freshwater roofs
Freshwater is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. Thatch survives on some older Isle of Wight buildings, and nowhere on the island is far from the sea. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
Take an older house close to All Saints' Church: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. For site and facilities teams at buildings like All Saints Church of England Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. Historic houses like Mottistone Manor, about 4.6 miles south-east, show how far back building around Freshwater goes. For older roofs nearby, a look from above or with a thermal imager is a hands-off way to check condition.
Freshwater is about 5 miles south of Lymington, in the Isle of Wight. Anywhere in Freshwater, we can carry out drone roof surveys at your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. Freshwater is one of the towns and villages in the Isle of Wight we cover. For surveys nearby, see our Southampton page.
All of PO40 is within our area for drone roof surveys. We offer drone roof surveys to properties on Dall Square, High Street and The Square. Nearby, we also carry out drone roof surveys in Easton (1 mile south-east), Colwell (1 mile north-west), Norton Green (1 mile north), Afton (1 mile south-east) and Totland (1 mile west). Within a short drive, we also cover Newport (10 miles east), Cowes (11 miles north-east), Shanklin (15 miles east), Ventnor (15 miles south-east), East Cowes (12 miles north-east) and Barton (10 miles east). If you’re somewhere remote, the survey takes a little more planning.

How the survey changes by roof type
Valleys and parapet gutters
Some older terraces have a butterfly roof with a valley in the middle. It’s almost impossible to see from the ground, but a drone shows it clearly.
Ridges and hips
Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. Their condition is noted in the report.
