How a drone roof survey works in East Cowes
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photos of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. If you’ve noticed plant growth and moss on the roof and flashings that have come away, we can find out what’s behind it.
Around East Cowes, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Tips that help
Small things make a difference. Some pointers:
- Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
- Shut pets inside while we fly
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Let us know what you want to see
Premium also includes a 12-month follow-up. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year, and whether work has done its job.
Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, particularly in autumn. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.
What happens if roof problems are left?
On a tall building, problems are often found only when water comes in. By that stage the damage has spread inside. A drone survey finds them sooner. Around East Cowes, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls, particularly where trees overhang. It is easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.
Every price we give includes VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

East Cowes questions
Will you come out to East Cowes?
Yes, East Cowes is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
How do I find out if my home in East Cowes is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
What’s the best way to book?
To arrange a survey, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know the address and what you need to know. We’ll confirm the price and agree a day with you.
Will I get photos?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.
How soon will I get the report?
Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline as you book.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, if the building owner or managing agent agrees access. We look at the parts we’re given access to.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
What we look for on each type of roof
Large commercial roofs
Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. The drone covers the roof area by area.
Valleys and parapet gutters
When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.
What happens on the day
Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take between one and two hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. For a survey in East Cowes, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- If permission is needed, we ask for it ahead of the visit.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
- Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

Advice
What you can safely check yourself
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
What a drone roof survey looks like in East Cowes
East Cowes lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.
Historic houses such as Osborne House, about 0.6 miles east, show how far back building around East Cowes goes. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. If you look after a building such as Isle of Wight Studio School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. Take an older house close to St James's Church: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
