About roof surveys in PO32
Across London and South East England, roofs differ widely. If your home is a Victorian terrace, it may have Welsh slate, a butterfly roof and parapet gutters, and many post-war homes have concrete interlocking tiles instead. Whatever yours has, the survey is adapted to it. Some older homes have clay tiles, and many have a flat-roofed extension as well. Every part gets the attention it needs. We’re often asked to look into leaking gutter joints and downpipes and ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs, across clay and concrete tiles, flat roofs and the roof space.
We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are.
- We help you choose a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
- On the day, we start by hearing what you’ve noticed.
- We inspect and photograph every part of the roof we can safely see.
- Extra checks are carried out where your package includes them.
- You get a written report with photos and clear recommendations.

Roof surveys across PO32: local notes
In PO32, our roof surveys work takes in owners, landlords and managing agents, from East Cowes and Whippingham to the quieter places in between. Each report sets out what was seen, with photographs and recommendations.
From inner London terraces to Kent oast houses, Sussex tile-hanging and Hampshire thatch, the South East has a huge mix of roofs. PO32 is part of that mix. Near the coast in PO32, wind can be strong, and a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides. Roofs there also face driving rain and salt air.
East Cowes: Take a building like Isle of Wight Studio School: a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. If you live in an older home near St James's Church, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.
Before and after the survey
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Photograph stains when they appear
- Stay off ladders and the roof
- Clear the loft hatch area before we arrive
- Look for debris in the garden after high winds
Where it helps, we say which items are urgent. Some things need prompt attention, others can be planned for. It makes the next steps much clearer.
Have the roof surveyed every few years, and after major storms. Regular checks catch problems while they’re small. Compare each report with the last.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Landlords and letting agents in PO32 book surveys as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos, which helps you plan work between tenancies.
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, including offices, shops and units. Larger roofs take longer.
Common roof problems in PO32
What’s under the slates or tiles is as important as the coverings themselves. Breathable membranes only appeared in the UK in the late 1990s, so many older roofs have bitumen felt underlay, and some very old roofs have no underlay at all. Felt that has torn or perished stops doing its job.
Typical things we’re asked to look at include:
- Worn or blocked valleys
- Worn lead at chimneys and abutments
- Ridge tiles that have lifted or moved
- Leaking gutter joints and downpipes
What a survey does not cover
This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- A promise that the roof won’t leak in future
- Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
- Asbestos testing of any kind
Different roofs, different checks
Clay plain and peg tiles
Older homes in the Weald and across the South East often have clay plain tiles, and some have Kent peg tiles held by pegs. Rotten pegs and battens let tiles move, leaving gaps along the courses.
Flat roof coverings
Ponding, blistering, splits and cracked surfaces are the common warning signs. We also look at the edges, upstands and outlets, since leaks often start there.
PO32: your questions answered
Do you use drones?
Yes, where it is applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days as you book.
How long does the visit take?
It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. The report follows within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Is PO32 in your area?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, and that includes PO32.
Do you go up on the roof?
Where it is safe, yes. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the roof space. The Premium Survey adds a drone where applicable.
What insurance do you have?
We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Can you survey a roof I share with a neighbour?
Yes, we inspect your part of the roof. We can only look at neighbouring roofs as far as access allows. Shared stacks and upstands are looked at from your property.
