Drone roof survey in Whippingham
Before any flight, we check the airspace. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If permission is not given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. If you’ve noticed standing water on a flat roof and eroded pointing on a chimney stack, we can find out what’s behind it, on fragile roofs, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs alike.
Villages like Whippingham often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Whippingham?
Chimney tops take the worst of the weather. From ground level, you rarely see cracked flaunching or loose pots. Close-up drone photos show their condition.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
- Chimney tops in poor condition
- Loose ridge and hip tiles
- Plant growth and moss on the roof
If you live in an older home near St. Mildred's Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

Whippingham: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Whippingham is listed?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Are there drone restrictions around Whippingham?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Do you work in Whippingham?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, and that includes Whippingham.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. If one is needed, the report says so.
How much is a survey?
Prices start from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT.
Will you check the loft?
If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
What affects the cost of drone roof surveys
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before booking. These are the things that affect it:
- Which survey package you book
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You’ll know the figure before booking.
What we need to know
Before you get in touch, it helps to have:
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- The property’s address and postcode
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
Every survey is priced before it is booked, so you know the cost up front. Prices start from £400, including VAT. To book, call 07833 053749 or email us.
What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Flights in high wind or heavy rain
- A flight where airspace permission is refused
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads

What we look at
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Tall and steep roofs
- Large and complex roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Fragile roofs
- Chimney stacks
What we do, step by step
The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photos go into the written report. It normally takes about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Rural addresses near Whippingham can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
- We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Before the survey
- Keep pets in another room
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property

Advice
Drone roof surveys around Whippingham
Whippingham lies within about 2 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.
Take a building like Queensgate Foundation Primary: big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. Osborne House lies about 0.7 miles north, so building around Whippingham goes back a long way. For older roofs nearby, a look from above or with a thermal imager is a hands-off way to check condition.

Tips from our surveys
There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:
- Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
- Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
- Shut pets inside while we fly
- Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
Keep the photos with your property records. They give you something to compare against later.
Do not block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up, and it’s something only an inside check will show. Check insulation doesn’t block the airflow.
