About our drone roof survey in Ryde

From the air, the outer surfaces are clear, but it cannot see under the coverings or into the loft. Where there’s safe access, we look in the roof space too, since that is where leaks and condensation often show first. Inside and out together tell you far more. The report sets out what the drone showed and what we found inside. Where the loft can’t be reached safely, we note it. Typical surveys look at cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots and loose ridge and hip tiles, across chimney stacks, flat roofs on upper floors and large and complex roofs.

In a town like Ryde, the roofs that are hardest to see are often on taller buildings, steep slopes or the backs of terraces. Close-up drone photos and thermal images show what binoculars from the pavement cannot. Both depend on the weather on the day. Rear slopes over back additions are a common example, as they’re rarely visible from the street.

The report doesn’t just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Drones, thermal imaging and Ryde roofs

Ryde is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. The wider area around Ryde has a long history of building, with Nunwell House about 2.8 miles south. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Ryde means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it pays to find faults before guests do. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Dover Park Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near All Saints' Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Different roofs, different checks

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Leaks often start at outlets, edges and around plant. They’re all captured in close-up, as far as the flight allows.

Chimney stacks

The drone shows the outside of the stack, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. We will say if a specialist is needed.

How the survey works

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. A visit in Ryde runs most smoothly with the loft hatch clear, side gates open and a parking spot in mind. Someone needs to let us in, so tell us who that will be.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep pets in another room
  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches

DIY checks: what’s safe

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.

How do I find out if my home in Ryde is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
