About our drone roof survey in Elmfield

A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. The camera stays on your roof, not on gardens or windows next door. If your roof is shared, a word with next door beforehand helps. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. If you’ve noticed worn lead at chimneys and walls and plant growth and moss on the roof, we can find out what’s behind it, on flat roofs on upper floors, chimney stacks and tall and steep roofs alike.

Around Elmfield, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.

Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Getting in touch

A few details help us point you to the right survey and price. When you contact us, tell us:

  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
  • What’s prompted the survey

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To find a date that works for you, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

What we look for on each type of roof

Valleys and parapet gutters

Blocked outlets in hidden gutters cause many leaks. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.

Large commercial roofs

Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor.

Drones, thermal imaging and Elmfield roofs

Elmfield lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. Some villages on the Isle of Wight still have thatched roofs, and the whole island is open to sea air and wind. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.

If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near St John's Church, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps. Nunwell House lies about 2.6 miles south, so building around Elmfield goes back a long way. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Elmfield is about 1 mile south-east of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. Elmfield gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. Across the Isle of Wight, we cover Elmfield and the places around it. For surveys nearby, see our Portsmouth page.

Postcode districts we cover here for drone roof surveys: PO33. If you need a drone roof survey at a property on Park Road, Rink Road and Hope Road or a nearby road, we can help. Elmfield sits on or near the A3055, so getting to you is simple. Other places close to Elmfield include Oakfield (1 mile west), Appley (1 mile north-east), Westridge (1 mile south), Ryde (1 mile north-west) and Puckpool (1 mile north-east). Larger places within reach include Newport (7 miles west), Cowes (7 miles west), Sandown (5 miles south), Shanklin (6 miles south), Ventnor (9 miles south) and East Cowes (6 miles west). Remote addresses need a little more planning, so please mention your location when you phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

What you can safely check yourself

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.

How it works

Before we start, tell us why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit typically takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Parking around Elmfield is normally easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from the ground, with the loft showing the underside, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where it applies.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Jot down any questions you want answered

What we can’t see

It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:

  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.

What we check

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Elmfield

Many roofs are never seen properly from the ground. You can’t see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Faults there can go unnoticed for years.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Standing water on a flat roof
  • Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Wind damage high on the roof

Take a building like Oakfield Church of England Aided Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Is VAT included in the price?
  • Will the report include photos?
  • Their drone registration, if they fly one
  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours

What a good roof survey covers

Elmfield: your questions answered

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Elmfield?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Do you cover smaller places like Elmfield?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

What will the report tell me?

A written report with photos, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

How do I arrange a drone roof survey in Elmfield?

The quickest way is to phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. Give us the address and some details about the roof, and we will take it from there. We survey seven days a week.

How much is a survey?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
