Morton Roof Survey
We carry out roof surveys in Morton and the rest of the Isle of Wight. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
- Leaking gutter joints and downpipes
- Lifted, split or missing lead flashings
- Ridge tiles that have lifted or moved
The survey, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit normally takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. In a small place like Morton, access is typically the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- You tell us about the property and any concerns.
- We arrange a day that suits you, including weekends.
- We look at the roof from each safe vantage point, inside and out.
- Every part of the roof is checked and photographed.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Tell us about parking before the day
- Jot down any questions you want answered

How a roof survey works in Morton
Our roof survey gives you a clear picture of your roof’s condition. We look at the coverings, the ridges and hips, the valleys and flashings, the chimneys and the gutters, along with the loft where it is safe to get in. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations. Where it helps, we say which items are urgent and which can wait. If you’ve noticed slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles and condensation or damp timbers in the loft, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Somewhere as small as Morton, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

About roof survey
For landlords and managing agents
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, with the most urgent items set out first.
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.
What a survey costs
Survey packages start from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on:
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
All our prices include VAT. Prices start from £150, including VAT. You will know the exact price before you book.
What to tell us when you get in touch
If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- The kind of building and roof involved
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- When you need the report by
To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us the address and what’s prompted the survey. You will know the price before anything is booked.
Leave it or get it looked at?
Leaks rarely show up right away. Insulation, plaster and timber can all be damp before you see a stain. From inside the roof space, we can often spot it sooner. In a place like Morton, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT.

Morton: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Morton is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is the coastal weather around Morton hard on roofs?
It can do. Morton is within about 1 mile of the sea, and coastal roofs tend to see faster wear on metal parts and more wind lifting loose pieces.
Are you insured?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Is your survey a structural engineer’s report?
No. We report on the roof’s condition, and Standard and Premium include structural checks. It isn’t a structural engineer’s report and does not include calculations.
How experienced are you?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.
Will you climb onto the roof?
Where it is safe, yes. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the roof space. The Premium Survey adds a drone where applicable.
Roof surveys around Morton
Morton lies within about 1 mile of the sea, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, while driving rain finds any gap. Some villages on the Isle of Wight still have thatched roofs, and the whole island is open to sea air and wind. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
Morton Manor, about 0.1 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Morton. Older homes in the area may have roofs that need matching materials when work is done. If you let a flat or house near Brading station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. Take an older house close to St. Mary's Church: its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
Morton is about 1 mile north-east of Sandown, in the Isle of Wight. Morton is one of many places we visit across the Isle of Wight, for houses, flats and commercial buildings. Morton is one of the places in the Isle of Wight we cover for roof surveys. For surveys nearby, see our Portsmouth page.
We work across the PO36 postcode area for roof surveys. You’ll find streets such as New Road, Wrax Road and Morton Road, all of which we cover. Morton sits on or near the A3055. Close by, we survey roofs in Yarbridge (1 mile north-east), Brading (1 mile north-east), Adgestone (1 mile west), Yaverland (1 mile south-east) and Sandown (1 mile south-west). Within a short drive, we also cover Newport (7 miles west), Ryde (4 miles north), Cowes (9 miles north-west), Shanklin (3 miles south-west), Ventnor (6 miles south-west) and East Cowes (8 miles north-west). If you are somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed, so let us know when you contact us.

Can I check my roof myself?
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
What this survey can’t tell you
No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Keep these in mind:
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
- Walls, floors and services below the roof
- An exact number of years the roof has left
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you. What a survey covers and does not.
