Our gutter survey service in the Isle of Wight
We look at the rainwater system above ground level, from the gutters down to where the downpipes meet the ground. It is not a CCTV drain survey and we can’t see inside buried drains. If the problem looks like a blocked or broken drain below ground, the report will say so, so you can get the drains checked separately. Anything we find above ground, like a split hopper or a leaking downpipe, is photographed and recorded. We survey downpipes, eaves gutters and outlets and hoppers, and common reasons people get in touch are water backing up from a hidden gutter and gutters full of debris and silt.
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. It typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.

Gutter surveys across the Isle of Wight: local notes
In the Isle of Wight, our gutter surveys work takes in owners, landlords and managing agents, from Newport, Ryde and Cowes to the quieter places in between. Each report sets out what was seen, with photographs and recommendations.
London and South East England mix slate and clay tile roofs on older homes with concrete tiles on many later ones, and flat-roofed extensions and dormers are common everywhere. That variety shapes every survey in the Isle of Wight. Coastal towns and villages in the Isle of Wight see more salt and wind than places inland, and metal fixings and lead suffer for it. After a storm, the seaward side of a roof is the place to look first.
Newport: Trees in and around Seaclose Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters. Take a building like Nine Acres Primary School: its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.
Surveys for landlords and agents in the Isle of Wight
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant, which helps when budgeting.
Letting agents and landlords in the Isle of Wight book surveys as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the gutter, with photographs.
What we’re asked to look at in the Isle of Wight
A good many tiled and slate roofs carry moss, and heavy rain washes clumps of it into the gutters. Mixed with grit from the roof, it settles as silt that holds water in the gutter and gives plants somewhere to grow.
People typically book a survey when they’ve noticed one of these:
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
- Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
- Brackets that have dropped or snapped
- Water spilling over the gutter edge
How the survey changes by roof type
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Plastic rainwater systems are common on homes of many ages. Their joints can leak as the seals wear and brackets may drop under the weight of debris.
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Metal gutters are common on commercial buildings and some homes. Their joints and outlets still need checking.
Prices for gutter surveys in the Isle of Wight
What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. The main factors are:
- How big the roof is
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- House, block, shop or office
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
What we need to know
The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you get in touch, it is useful to mention:
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
- What kind of property and roof it is
- The property’s address and postcode
Unsure which package suits your roof? The easiest way is to ring 07833 053749 or email us and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We’ll talk you through the options and what they cost.
Useful tips for the Isle of Wight property owners
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Watch the gutters during heavy rain
- Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
- Do not climb a ladder to look in the gutters
- Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
Once work is carried out, keep an eye on the gutters in the next downpour. Water should run to the outlets and away without spilling over. If it doesn’t, tell whoever did the work.
Hidden gutters need clearing too. They block in the same way as the gutters you can see but you cannot check them from the street, so check they’re included in any clearing work.
Questions from the Isle of Wight
Do you check valley and parapet gutters?
Yes. Hidden gutters are a common cause of leaks inside so we pay close attention to them. Some may only be partly visible, and we’ll note that in the report.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
Does the report include photos?
Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, so you can see what we mean.
Could my damp wall be caused by the gutters?
We check whether rainwater from the gutters is reaching the wall, through overflows, drips or damaged downpipes. We cannot see inside walls, so we report on what’s visible.
How do I book a survey in the Isle of Wight?
The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. Tell us the address and a little about the roof. We survey seven days a week.
What happens next?
You’ll receive the report by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
What’s in the report?
A written report with photos, explaining the condition of the gutter, any defects and our recommendations. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
