About our gutter survey in Chale
Damp on walls, water marks under a valley or streaks down the brickwork frequently trace back to the gutters. Our gutter survey helps show whether the rainwater system is the cause, from whatever is safely visible. If the evidence points elsewhere, such as a flashing or the roof covering, we’ll say so. The next step is suggested too. Common reasons to book are leaking or loose downpipes and brackets that have dropped or snapped, across parapet and box gutters, valley gutters and downpipes.
Some older homes in villages like Chale are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
It isn’t only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

What happens if roof problems are left?
Climbing a ladder to look in the gutters yourself is risky. From the ground you can spot drips and overflows but hidden gutters are another matter. We inspect as far as it is safe to see and put it in writing. For older village homes like those around Chale, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
Every price we give includes VAT. Prices start from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for your survey before booking.

What we look for on each type of roof
Fascias and soffits
Most gutters are fixed to the fascia, so a rotten fascia can let the gutter drop. Damaged or stained boards are recorded.
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Older plastic gutters can turn brittle and split. We check joints, brackets and the line of each run.
Gutter surveys around Chale
Chale is within about 1 mile of the coast, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof. Thatch survives on some older Isle of Wight buildings, and the whole island is open to sea air and wind. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
If you live in an older home near St Andrew's Church, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
Chale is about 7 miles south of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. Roofs in Chale get the same thorough look as anywhere else in the Isle of Wight. Our the Isle of Wight coverage includes Chale and the places around it. Portsmouth is in our area too.

Prices for gutter surveys in Chale
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- The size of the roof
One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
What to let us know when you get in touch
A few details help us suggest the right survey and price. When you get in touch, it helps to mention:
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
- The kind of building and roof involved
- Anything about access we should know
Our phone lines are open seven days a week. To book or ask a question, call 07833 053749 or email us.
How it works
We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit normally takes between one and two hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Somewhere like Chale needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.
- You let us know where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
- We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- The loft space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- A written report with photos and recommendations follows.
Preparing for the visit
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

FAQs for Chale
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Chale, take more of a battering?
Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, while strong wind lifts anything already loose.
Is my home in Chale listed or in a conservation area?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?
Yes, weekend visits are possible as well as weekdays. To book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.
Do you cover Chale?
Yes. We cover Chale and the rest of the Isle of Wight, as part of our work across London and the South East. To book, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Does someone need to be in?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Will you check the loft?
If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.
Checking the roof from the ground
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Signs you need a gutter survey in Chale
Falling leaves are the most common cause of blocked gutters. Every autumn, trees fill gutters with leaves, twigs and seeds, and they collect at the outlets. Once an outlet is choked, the gutter fills and overflows.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
- Leaking or loose downpipes
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Leaks at the gutter joints
Wolverton Manor, about 3.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Chale. On a period home nearby, the survey separates sound original work from tired later repairs.
