Gutter surveys in Newport

Gutter survey in Newport

Damp on walls, water marks under a valley or streaks down the brickwork often trace back to the gutters. We check whether gutters, outlets or downpipes are the likely source, as far as can safely be seen. Where the cause looks more like the roof covering or a flashing, the report says so, with a suggested next step. We survey eaves gutters, valley gutters and outlets and hoppers, and common reasons people get in touch are blocked outlets and hoppers and leaking or loose downpipes.

In a town like Newport, most homes are houses whose owners look after their own roofs. A slipped tile or blocked gutter costs far less to sort than the damp it causes later. A roof report gives you a list of what needs doing and how soon. The photos let you see the parts of the roof you can’t get to.

Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

For landlords and managing agents

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in, at a time agreed beforehand. We survey seven days a week, which can make access easier.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps when budgeting.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Newport

Newport is within about 5 miles of the coast, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Carisbrooke Castle, about 1 mile south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Newport. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Nine Acres Primary School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

Newport is about 10 miles south-west of Gosport, in the Isle of Wight. Surveys in Newport work the same way as everywhere we cover: a careful look at whatever is safely visible, photos and a clear written report. Our the Isle of Wight coverage includes Newport. For surveys nearby, see our Portsmouth page.

We cover every part of PO30 for gutter surveys. Local streets include High Street, Red Fox Square and Drill Hall Road, all of which we cover. Newport sits on or near the A3020 and A3054. Close by, we survey roofs in Shide (1 mile south-east), Blackwater (2 miles south), Downend (2 miles east), Merstone (3 miles south-east) and Rookley (3 miles south). Further out, we also cover Ryde (6 miles east), Cowes (4 miles north), Sandown (7 miles south-east), Shanklin (7 miles south-east), Ventnor (8 miles south-east) and East Cowes (4 miles north). As one of the bigger places in the Isle of Wight, Newport has every kind of building, from houses and flats to offices. If you are somewhere remote, the survey takes a little more planning.

Our report is a dated record of what we found, which helps when you plan work or brief a contractor. Without it, you’re relying on what can be seen from the pavement. Roof faults found early can be planned for, whereas a leak tends to force the timing on you.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Do you need a gutter survey in Newport?

Sometimes a gutter struggles with the area of roof draining into it. Added roof area from an extension can load an older gutter, and a heavy downpour shows up the problem.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Brackets that have dropped or snapped
  • Leaking or loose downpipes
  • Leaves and moss blocking gutters
  • Choked outlets or hopper heads

Homes near green spaces such as Seaclose Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn.

Newport questions

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Newport?

Near the coast, roofs face more wind and more salt than further inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, while strong wind lifts anything already loose.

Is Newport in the area you cover?

Yes. We work right across London and the South East, and Newport is part of that. Just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the property, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.

How many surveys have you done?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.

Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?

Yes, we carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays as well as weekdays. To book, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Does someone need to be in?

Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when booking.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

The survey, step by step

Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. Most visits in a town like Newport start at the front of the house and work round to the back. The back garden is frequently where extensions, dormers and rear slopes are best seen, so unlocked gates help. The loft comes next, where there is safe access.

  1. You tell us where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
  2. We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
  3. Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
  4. The loft space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
  5. You receive a report with photos and recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Advice

What this survey cannot tell you

A survey is a proper look at the gutter, but it can’t do everything. The main limits are:

  • Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
  • What’s hidden inside a downpipe
  • Gutters out of sight from every safe viewpoint

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.
