Common questions in Merstone

Is Merstone within the area you cover?

Yes, Merstone is covered. We survey roofs across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.

Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Shanklin station?

Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the building.

Will you check the drains below ground?

No. Our gutter survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters to the bottom of the downpipes. If a drain below ground looks like the cause, the report says so.

Do you check valley and parapet gutters?

Yes. These gutters frequently cause leaks indoors when they block so we pay close attention to them. Some may only be partly visible, and we will note that in the report.

Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?

You can book at any time of year. Booking before autumn and winter gives you time to plan though problems often show up after heavy rain.

How do I arrange a gutter survey in Merstone?

The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or email us. Give us the address and a few details about the roof, and we will point you to the right survey. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

When does the report arrive?

Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. Mention any deadline as you book.

Gutter survey in Merstone

Damp patches on inside walls, stains below a valley or water running down the brickwork can often be traced to the gutters. Our gutter survey helps show whether the rainwater system is the cause, from whatever is safely visible. Where the cause looks more like the roof covering or a flashing, the report says so. The next step is suggested too. We survey valley gutters, fascias and soffits and outlets and hoppers, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are choked outlets or hopper heads and valley or box gutters that overflow inside.

Somewhere as small as Merstone, homes are frequently older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. We report on what can safely be seen, and thatch is a specialist material. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Tips that help

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Our tips:

  • Get the gutters cleaned out every year
  • Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
  • Look out for overflows when it pours
  • Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks

Questions about the report are welcome. With the Standard Survey there is a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey comes with an in-person one.

Get the gutters cleared every year, and more frequently if trees overhang the roof. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clean gutters can do their job.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Merstone

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant, which helps with budgets and planning.

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Bigger roofs take more time, so they’re priced to suit.

How we price gutter surveys

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • House, block, shop or office
  • The roof’s overall size

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the report isn’t charged as an extra. Prices start from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Booking your survey

These details help when you contact us:

  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Where the property is, with the postcode

Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, so ring 07833 053749 or email us with the details.

How the survey works

We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes about one to two hours for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Cottages and farmhouses around Merstone often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from the ground and vantage points.
  3. Any valley, parapet or box gutters are looked at as far as safe access allows.
  4. Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
  5. You get a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Leave side gates unlocked

Advice

What we are asked to look at in Merstone

Many gutter joints depend on rubber seals or sealant that age. Plastic gutters move with heat and cold so their joints can start to leak. Cast iron joints can corrode and part where the paint has failed.

People usually book a survey after spotting something like this:

  • Choked outlets or hopper heads
  • Gutters that have fallen out of line
  • Rotten fascias or stained soffits
  • Leaves and moss blocking gutters

For landlords with property near Shanklin station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.

What’s in a roof survey

What a gutter survey does not cover

A survey is a careful look at the gutter, but it cannot do everything. The main limits are:

  • Hidden sections we cannot view safely
  • Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
  • Blockages deep inside downpipes

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Gutter surveys around Merstone

Merstone lies within about 5 miles of the sea, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof. The wider area around Merstone has a long history of building, with Arreton Manor about 1.1 miles north. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

Merstone is about 3 miles south-east of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. In Merstone, as across the Isle of Wight, every roof gets the same careful survey. Our area takes in places right across the Isle of Wight, large and small. We also survey roofs in Portsmouth.
