Thermal roof survey in Chale: what you get

A thermal survey is not a quick fix for every roof problem. Sun, shade, reflective surfaces and wind can all change what the camera shows. That is why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. If a finding cannot be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. Common reasons to book are leaks far from where the stain appears and water getting in at parapets and stacks, on commercial roofs, flat roofs and loft conversions.

Older buildings in small places like Chale may be listed or in a conservation area. A look by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

What we are asked to look at in Chale

After a repair, some owners want to know whether the roof has dried out. Thermal images and moisture readings can suggest whether moisture is still trapped, given suitable conditions on the day.

Most people get in touch after spotting one of these:

  • Water that travels before it shows
  • Stains that keep coming back
  • Gaps in loft insulation
  • Heat escaping through the roof

Historic houses like Wolverton Manor, about 3.4 miles north-west, show how far back building around Chale goes. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • What insurance they carry
  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?

What a good roof survey covers

Why act early in Chale

Heat lost through a roof costs money every winter. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so improvements can go where they’re needed. Around Chale, older homes frequently have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can be seen safely and which survey you book.

Why book with us

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Chale

The coast is about 1 mile or less from Chale. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. A number of the island’s villages keep thatched roofs on older buildings, and the whole island is open to sea air and wind. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail.

If you live in an older home near St Andrew's Church, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

Chale is about 7 miles south of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. Chale is one of many places we visit across the Isle of Wight, for houses, flats and commercial buildings. We cover towns and villages across the Isle of Wight. You can also see our page for Portsmouth.

Here we cover the PO38 postcode area for thermal roof surveys. Whether your property is on Church Place, Upper House Lane and Blythe Shute or a nearby road, we can survey it. Nearby, we also carry out thermal roof surveys in Blackgang (1 mile south-east), Pyle (1 mile north-west), Chale Green (1 mile north), Atherfield Green (1 mile north-west) and Niton (2 miles south-east). Landlord and commercial surveys in Chale

Letting agents and landlords in Chale book surveys as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it as you book and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.

Roof by roof

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Even on pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp. The report explains what the images can tell you and what they cannot.

Loft insulation

From inside the loft, thermal imaging can show gaps in insulation and cold spots. We look where there is safe access.

What a thermal roof survey does not cover

This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • Confirming water without moisture readings
  • Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
  • Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.

What we check

  • Flat roofs
  • Loft conversions
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Commercial roofs
  • Insulated roof spaces

Chale questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Chale?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Chale?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

Will the camera show exactly where the water is?

No, not on its own. It shows temperature, and wet materials often behave differently from dry ones. That’s why we check any patterns with moisture readings.

Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?

It can help, but the results are frequently less clear than on a flat roof. Slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s below, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.

How long does the survey take?

It typically takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. We’ll confirm the timing when booking.

What happens on the day

Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Older roofs in small places like Chale can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Before the survey

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
