- Ceilings that feel colder in places
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Missing or slipped insulation
How a thermal roof survey works in Ryde
Wet insulation under a flat roof covering holds heat for longer than dry. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. This can give an idea of how far water has travelled beneath the membrane, which is hard to judge by eye. We then check those areas with moisture readings. If you are worried about water getting in at parapets and stacks and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering, we can find out what’s behind it, on ceilings below the roof, insulated roof spaces and flat roofs alike.
In older houses around Ryde, loft insulation can be thin, patchy or missing in places. A thermal camera shows those cold and warm patches, and some of them can point to moisture. It shows temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Results depend on conditions, so the timing of the visit matters.
If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

What happens if roof problems are left?
Before replacing a large flat roof, it’s useful to know how much of it is actually wet. Thermal imaging, checked with moisture readings, gives a clearer picture before you spend. A defect spotted early can be planned and budgeted for, while one found after water comes through usually has to be dealt with in a hurry.
Every price we give includes VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Prices start from £400, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

What else we do in Ryde
Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Ryde
How should I get ready for a visit in Ryde?
Mostly, it is about access: the loft hatch, any locked gates and where to park in Ryde. Tell us about known leaks or past repairs as well.
Do you cover Ryde?
Yes, Ryde is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a few details.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it as you book and we will explain what’s needed.
Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a same-day report.
Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?
Thermal imaging can help, alongside other checks. What it shows depends on the weather and the roof. Where it can’t be pinned down, the report suggests a next step, like electronic leak detection.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where applicable and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.
What’s the best way to book?
The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Tell us the address and a little about the roof, and we will take it from there. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.
Different roofs, different checks
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
These coverings sit directly on the layers beneath, so temperature differences frequently show through. Any patterns are checked with moisture readings.
GRP fibreglass roofs
GRP surfaces can be shiny, which affects thermal readings. We allow for reflections and confirm findings with moisture readings.
What you can safely check yourself
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.
The survey, step by step
Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes between one and two hours at a typical home, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. For a visit in Ryde, we need access to the loft, any rooms with leaks or stains, and the outside of the building. If there’s a side gate or a rear garden, let us know how to reach it. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Preparing for the visit
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
Book a survey
If you are buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. Otherwise, simply phone 07833 053749 or send us an email whenever suits you.
Advice
Thermal roof surveys in Ryde: local notes
Ryde lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and coastal wind can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Thatch survives on some older Isle of Wight buildings, and nowhere on the island is far from the sea. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
For hotels and guest houses around Ryde, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest, so it pays to find faults before guests do. Take an older house close to All Saints' Church: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Ryde?
Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. The camera helps narrow the search.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
- Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
Historic houses such as Nunwell House, about 2.8 miles south, show how far back building around Ryde goes. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.
