Thermal roof survey in Westridge
Thermal imaging works best in the right conditions. It is useful to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, a strong wind or heavy cloud can make the images less clear. We will discuss the weather with you when booking, and our report notes the conditions and how they affected what we saw. If you’ve noticed leaks far from where the stain appears and damp patches with no obvious cause, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
In a small place like Westridge, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Can I check my roof myself?
A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Westridge
Is my home in Westridge listed or in a conservation area?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is drone flying allowed in Westridge?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Westridge is about 3 miles from Bembridge Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Are you insured?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?
No, not on its own. It shows temperature, and wet materials often behave differently from dry ones. That is why we check any patterns with moisture readings.
How quickly is the report sent?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email, ready to forward.
Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?
Thermal imaging can help, alongside other checks. What it shows depends on the weather and the roof. If the source cannot be confirmed, we’ll say what could help next, like electronic leak detection.
What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
- Proving moisture from the images alone
If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Loft conversions
- Ceilings below the roof
- Commercial roofs
- Insulated roof spaces
- Pitched roof slopes
- Flat roofs
Common roof problems in Westridge
Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. The camera helps narrow the search.
We are frequently asked to look at:
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Oakfield Church of England Aided Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
Before booking anyone
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Is VAT included in the price?
- What follow-up you get after the report
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
The survey, step by step
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, like stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will take it from there. A typical survey takes between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. In a hamlet or village like Westridge, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- We check the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.
Before we arrive
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we are coming

Advice
Practical tips
Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. A few suggestions:
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
After the visit, we put the thermal images, photos and moisture readings into one report. We explain what each image may mean, alongside what we recommend. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.
Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.
Drones, thermal imaging and Westridge roofs
The coast is about 2 miles or less from Westridge, and wind off the sea can be strong. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. Nunwell House, about 2.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Westridge. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.
Hotels and guest houses near Westridge can’t easily close rooms for a leak, so it pays to find faults before guests do. For an older house near a landmark like St John's Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Westridge is about 1 mile south-east of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. In Westridge, as across the Isle of Wight, every roof gets the same careful survey. We cover towns and villages across the Isle of Wight, from the larger towns to small villages. For surveys nearby, see our Portsmouth page.
Here we cover the PO33 postcode area for thermal roof surveys. If you need a thermal roof survey at a property on Bullen Road, Hayward Avenue and Salisbury Road or anywhere close by, we can survey it. Westridge sits on or near the A3055, which makes travel easy. Neighbouring places we cover for thermal roof surveys include Elmfield (1 mile north), Oakfield (1 mile north-west), Appley (1 mile north), Pondwell (1 mile east) and Puckpool (1 mile north-east). We also work in nearby towns like Newport (7 miles west), Cowes (8 miles north-west), Sandown (4 miles south), Shanklin (6 miles south), Ventnor (9 miles south) and East Cowes (7 miles north-west). Harder-to-reach addresses take a little more planning, so please mention your location when you call 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Roof by roof
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Built-up felt and asphalt roofs can hide trapped water for a long time. Thermal imaging helps suggest where it is, given suitable conditions on the day.
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
Many single-ply and EPDM roofs sit on insulation boards. If water gets under them, thermal imaging can suggest which boards are wet.
