New roof snagging in Chale

A new roof needs to breathe. Where vents have been fitted at the ridge or eaves, we check them and look in the roof space for condensation. We note what we can see. Without enough airflow, a roof space can suffer from condensation, which is easier to put right while the roofer is still involved. It all goes in the report. We are often asked to look into gutters blocked by building debris and loose or badly finished ridge tiles, on loft conversions and dormers, new flat roofs and replacement roofs.

Being in a small place like Chale makes no difference to the inspection itself: it just means planning the journey and access beforehand. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages with roofs you’d like looked at as you book, so the visit can be planned around them. Buyers and owners of new roofs get the same approach as anywhere. Visits can be booked seven days a week.

We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly.

What happens on the day

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. It usually takes between one and two hours for a house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Somewhere as small as Chale, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We start with what the roofer did and when they finished.
  2. We check the coverings, ridges, hips and verges from safe vantage points.
  3. Valleys, flashings, gutters and visible underlay at the eaves are checked.
  4. We check the loft where safe and look for debris or damage.
  5. You get a photo report of each snag.

New roof snagging in Chale: local notes

The coast is about 1 mile or less from Chale, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Corroded clips and nails and lifted ridge pieces are typical of exposed roofs near the sea, which is worth knowing before you buy or pay for new work. About 3.4 miles north-west lies Wolverton Manor, a reminder of how long the area around Chale has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

For an older house near a landmark such as St Andrew's Church, older patch repairs can hide behind a tidy front slope, and the survey looks past them.

Chale is about 7 miles south of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. We carry out new roof snagging in Chale for houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings. Chale is one of the places in the Isle of Wight we cover. Our Portsmouth page covers surveys nearby.

Questions from Chale

Is the coastal weather around Chale hard on roofs?

Generally, yes: wind and salt air take more of a toll near the sea. Exposed details such as ridges, verges, flashings and metal fixings are the ones to watch, and Chale is within about 1 mile of the coast.

Will you come out to Chale?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

How long does new roof snagging take?

For a house, expect about 1–2 hours on site, and longer for large or complex roofs.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We carry out surveys on weekdays and at weekends. To arrange a date, ring 07833 053749 or email us.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

Do I need to be at home?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We’ll talk about access when you book.

Practical tips

Small things make a difference. Our tips:

  • Put any issues to your roofer in writing
  • Check the roof before you pay in full
  • Watch for drips in the loft space with care
  • Keep the contract and invoices together

Keep the report with any warranty papers from your roofer. It’s a dated record of the roof at handover.

File the contract, invoices and warranty papers in one place. The report belongs with them.

How the survey changes by roof type

Underlay and ventilation

From the loft, we check the underlay and look for condensation.

Valleys

Debris left in a new valley can block it. Leftover debris is recorded.

How we price new roof snagging

We confirm the price for your survey before you book. These are the things that affect it:

  • How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • Roof area
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets

One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Booking your survey

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • The property’s address and postcode

To get a price for new roof snagging in Chale, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. The address, the type of property and what you’d like to know help us give you an accurate price.

Checking the roof from ground level

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Why get it checked now?

Defects and warranty periods have an end date. A snagging inspection before then leaves time to act. In a small place like Chale, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you need to know.
