How a gutter survey works in Cross Lane
We carry out gutter surveys in Cross Lane as part of our cover across London and the South East. On the day, we inspect what can be seen safely from the ground, windows, the roof space and the roof where it’s safe. Time on site normally takes about one to two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. The written report follows, with photographs and recommendations. We survey valley gutters, outlets and hoppers and fascias and soffits, and people most often book us about hoppers and outlets full of debris and leaves and moss blocking gutters.
Around Cross Lane, gardens, hedges and nearby trees can mean leaves and moss end up on roofs and in gutters. Blocked gutters overflow and soak the walls below, and moss holds water against tiles. A report spots that kind of slow problem before it becomes damp inside. Moss on the roof and weeds in the gutter are both easy to spot from ground level.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Can I check my roof myself?
A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
The survey, step by step
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you’d like to know. After that, we look at everything we can see safely. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Cross Lane is booked with the forecast in mind: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.
- We ask about overflows, damp or leaks you’ve noticed.
- Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
- We check hidden gutters, such as valleys and parapets, where it’s safe to see them.
- Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
- We send a written report with photos and clear recommendations.
How to prepare
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

What else we do in Cross Lane
Cross Lane homes and their roofs
The coast is about 5 miles or less from Cross Lane, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof. The wider area around Cross Lane has a long history of building, with Carisbrooke Castle about 1.7 miles south-west. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Summerfields Primary School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. The streets around a church like St Paul's Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.
Cross Lane is about 1 mile north-east of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. In Cross Lane, as across the Isle of Wight, every roof gets the same careful survey. Cross Lane is one of the towns and villages in the Isle of Wight we cover for gutter surveys. Our Portsmouth page covers surveys nearby.
Surveys in PO30, PO31 and PO41 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We offer gutter surveys to properties on Ash Road, Chain Lane and Beech Road and the roads around them. We also cover Barton (1 mile south), Fairlee (1 mile north), Staplers (1 mile south-east), Hillgrove (1 mile north-east) and Whippingham (3 miles north). Further out, we also cover Ryde (5 miles east), Cowes (4 miles north), Sandown (6 miles south-east), Shanklin (7 miles south-east), Ventnor (8 miles south-east) and East Cowes (3 miles north). For harder-to-reach addresses, a little more planning is needed, so let us know when you get in touch.

We work in homes and buildings around Bargeman's Rest pub, Island Innovation VI Form Campus and Seaclose Park and the streets around them. Do you need a gutter survey in Cross Lane?
Some gutters may be too small, or have too few downpipes, for the roof they serve. An extension or extra roof slope can add water to an existing gutter, and a heavy downpour shows up the problem.
Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed one of these:
- Water backing up from a hidden gutter
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
Trees in and around Seaclose Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.

- Will the report include photos?
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
What we look for on each type of roof
Cast iron gutters
A cracked cast iron downpipe can leak down the wall unseen, so we check the wall behind for staining.
Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
We check the lining, the joints and the outlets where it’s safe to see them. Lead is also a target for theft.
Common questions in Cross Lane
Is the coastal weather around Cross Lane hard on roofs?
Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there’s more wind, and more salt in the air. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it typically shows, and Cross Lane is within about 5 miles of the coast.
Will you come out to Cross Lane?
Yes. Cross Lane is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Do you survey at weekends?
Yes. Surveys are carried out on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just call 07833 053749 or email us to arrange a day.
Can you tell me if my old gutters contain asbestos?
No, that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor. We point out materials on older buildings that could contain asbestos so you can arrange that check.
What’s in the survey report?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, finishing with recommendations. The most urgent items are made clear.
How much time does the visit need?
A visit normally takes between one and two hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. You will know roughly how long when we arrange the visit.
What affects the price in Cross Lane
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:
- How big the roof is
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- Whether it is a home or a commercial building
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before you book.
