Gutter survey in Whitwell
Your gutters take the rain from the roof and lead it away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t and that typically means the walls or the inside of the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, from eaves gutters and valleys to outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. We’re frequently asked to look into leaks at the gutter joints and sagging gutters and loose brackets, on downpipes, fascias and soffits and outlets and hoppers.
Somewhere as small as Whitwell, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. We report on what can be seen safely, and thatch is a specialist material. On older roofs, it’s typically the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photo. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

Gutter surveys in Whitwell: local notes
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Whitwell, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift. Some villages on the Isle of Wight still have thatched roofs, and nowhere on the island is far from the sea. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
Sheat Manor, about 4.4 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Whitwell. Older roofs nearby frequently mix original materials with later repairs, and the survey shows where each one is. For landlords with property near Shanklin station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Niton Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.
Whitwell is about 7 miles south of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. Roofs in Whitwell get the same thorough look as anywhere else in the Isle of Wight. We cover towns and villages across the Isle of Wight, large and small. We also survey roofs in Portsmouth.

What you can safely check yourself
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That is where a survey comes in.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.
The survey, step by step
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes about one to two hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. You’re welcome to ask questions while we are there. In a hamlet or village like Whitwell, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- You tell us where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
- We look at hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- A report with photos and recommendations follows.
Getting ready for the survey

Common questions in Whitwell
Will you come out to Whitwell?
Yes, Whitwell is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
How do I find out if my home in Whitwell is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Do you survey at weekends?
Yes. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. To find a day that suits, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Could my damp wall be caused by the gutters?
The survey looks at whether rainwater is spilling onto the wall, through overflows, drips or damaged downpipes. We cannot see inside the wall itself, so the report covers what can be seen.
Will the survey check for asbestos?
No, that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor. We point out materials on older buildings that could contain asbestos so you can arrange that check.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes. Photos are part of every report.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
Practical tips
Getting the most from a gutter survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:
- Have overhanging branches cut back
- Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
- Watch for green marks down the brickwork
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
Once work is carried out, keep an eye on the gutters in the next downpour. Water should run to the outlets and away without spilling over, and if it doesn’t, raise it with whoever did the job.
Have your gutters cleared at least once a year or more often near trees. The best time is typically after the leaves have dropped. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.
When you need someone else
To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods
- Blockages deep inside downpipes
- Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

Different roofs, different checks
