About our gutter survey in Puckaster
Eaves gutters at the front of a building are easy to spot, but many are not. Valley, parapet, box and secret gutters can overflow inside the building when they block. We check them as far as they can be seen safely, from the ground, from windows, from the loft space and from the roof where it’s safe. Hidden gutters are a common source of leaks inside. Typical surveys look at leaking or loose downpipes and water spilling over the gutter edge, across fascias and soffits, valley gutters and eaves gutters.
In a village or hamlet like Puckaster, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are frequently old. We report on everything that’s safely in view, and thatch is a specialist material. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
What you get is a clear record of the gutter on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

What we’re asked to look at in Puckaster
Leaves are behind most blocked gutters. Nearby trees drop leaves, twigs and seeds into gutters every autumn and the debris builds up at the outlets. A choked outlet soon means a full, overflowing gutter.
A survey can pick up problems like:
- Brackets that have dropped or snapped
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Joints that drip after rain
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
Anyone responsible for a site like Niton Primary School will know that large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

How the survey works
The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the gutter as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit normally takes about one to two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Somewhere as small as Puckaster, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, like damp or overflowing gutters.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
- The loft space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- A report with photos and recommendations follows.

Related advice
Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Look for downpipes coming loose
- Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
- Watch for green marks down the brickwork
- Have overhanging branches cut back
How quickly the report arrives depends on the package: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. It’s sent to you by email as soon as it’s ready.
Get trees and climbers near the eaves trimmed back using someone with the right kit. Fewer leaves in the gutters means fewer blockages.
Gutter surveys in Puckaster: local notes
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Puckaster, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift. Thatch survives on some older Isle of Wight buildings, and the whole island is open to sea air and wind. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
The streets around a church like Church of St. John the Baptist are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
Puckaster is about 6 miles south-west of Shanklin, in the Isle of Wight. Surveys in Puckaster work the same way as everywhere we cover: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. Puckaster is one of the towns and villages in the Isle of Wight where we work for gutter surveys. For surveys nearby, see our Portsmouth page.
Here we cover the PO38 postcode area for gutter surveys. We offer gutter surveys to properties on Puckaster Lane and Undercliff Drive. We also cover Niton (1 mile north), Blackgang (1 mile north-west), Bierley (1 mile north), Whitwell (2 miles north-east) and Nettlecombe (2 miles north-east). Larger places within reach include Newport (8 miles north), Ryde (11 miles north-east), Cowes (12 miles north), Sandown (7 miles north-east), Shanklin (6 miles north-east) and Ventnor (3 miles east). Harder-to-reach addresses take a little more planning, so tell us where you are when you book.

Honest limits
We only report what can safely be seen on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:
- Gutters out of sight from every safe viewpoint
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
- Pipes below ground level

Can I check my roof myself?
It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when booking, as it helps us focus the survey.
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
What affects the price in Puckaster
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before booking. These are the things that affect it:
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Roof area
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
To find out what your survey will cost, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details. The price is agreed before a date is set.
Booking your survey
There is no need for technical words. Just tell us:
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- The address and postcode of the property
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- Anything about access we should know
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To get started, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
FAQs for Puckaster
Is Puckaster within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
Is the coastal weather around Puckaster hard on roofs?
Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.
Can you tell me if my old gutters contain asbestos?
No, that is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. We point out materials on older buildings that could contain asbestos so it can be checked before work starts.
What’s in the report?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, backed by photos. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely.
How soon will I get the report?
It depends on the package: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.
Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?
You can book at any time of year. Before the wetter months gives you time to plan any work, and a wet spell can show where gutters overflow.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We’re roof surveyors, not structural engineers. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
