- Joints that drip after rain
- Water spilling over the gutter edge
What we do, step by step
We don’t take risks to get a closer look. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. Most visits take an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Being in a smaller place like Hunny Hill doesn’t change how the visit works: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. It’s useful to show us anything you’ve already noticed.
- We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
How to prepare
- Check pets are kept safely away
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

About our gutter survey in Hunny Hill
Leaves, moss and silt are the usual reasons gutters block. Homes close to trees fill their gutters faster, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. Photos show each problem clearly. It’s an easy job to put off, but they rarely get better. Typical surveys look at leaking or loose downpipes and overflowing valley or parapet gutters, on eaves gutters, downpipes and parapet and box gutters.
In a smaller place like Hunny Hill, some roofs stand more exposed to wind and rain than in a built-up town. That weather tells first on ridges, verges, chimneys and flashings. Checking those edges shows whether anything has begun to work loose. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, sent by email. It explains the condition of the gutter, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Hunny Hill
It is easy to put damp down to the wrong cause. When rainwater goods are the source, treating the wall alone won’t solve it. Checking the gutters first helps you spend in the right place. Around Hunny Hill, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls, particularly where trees overhang. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.
Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can be seen safely and the package you choose.

Questions from Hunny Hill
Is the coastal weather around Hunny Hill hard on roofs?
Frequently, yes. Hunny Hill is within about 4 miles of the sea, and coastal roofs tend to see faster wear on metal parts and more wind lifting loose pieces.
Is Hunny Hill within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Can you tell me if my old gutters contain asbestos?
No, that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor. We point out materials on older buildings that could contain asbestos so you can arrange that check.
Can a gutter survey explain damp on my walls?
Overflowing gutters often lead to damp walls, and the survey looks for that. If the cause looks like something else, the report says so as far as we can tell from what’s visible.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We point out what can be seen, like sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.
What happens after the survey?
You’ll receive the report by email, and you decide the next step: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
It depends on what we need to see. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Hunny Hill
Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with the building owner or managing agent. Let us know about it when you book and we will plan the survey around it.
We survey roofs for letting agents and landlords as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the gutter, with photographs.
What you can safely check yourself
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
What we look for on each type of roof
Fascias and soffits
On buildings from before 2000, soffits may be asbestos cement. We flag any that could be for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check.
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Joints that have pulled apart are a common fault on plastic gutters. We record each one we can see.
Practical tips
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Check for spilling water in a downpour
- Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
- Have gutters cleared at least once a year
For let and shared buildings, the report can go on file to help plan maintenance. The photos help when you explain the work to others.
Have overhanging branches and climbing plants cut back from the roof by someone who can do it safely. Fewer leaves in the gutters means fewer blockages.
What a gutter survey looks like in Hunny Hill
The coast is about 4 miles or less from Hunny Hill, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, while driving rain finds any gap. A number of the island’s villages keep thatched roofs on older buildings, and nowhere on the island is far from the sea. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
Take a building like Hunnyhill Primary School: its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. Trees in and around Seaclose Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. Carisbrooke Castle lies about 1.3 miles south-west, so building around Hunny Hill goes back a long way. If your house is among the older ones, the roof may have been repaired many times, and the survey records how each part is holding up.
