Gutter surveys in Forest Side: local notes
Forest Side is within about 4 miles of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift, while driving rain finds any gap. With Carisbrooke Castle about 1.3 miles south, Forest Side sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
The streets around a church such as St. Mary's Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. Homes near green spaces such as Seaclose Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.

About our gutter survey in Forest Side
We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Forest Side and right across London and South East England. On the day, we inspect what can be seen safely from the ground, windows, the loft space and the roof where it’s safe. Time on site normally takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Afterwards, you get a written report with photos and recommendations. If you’re worried about overflowing eaves gutters and leaking or loose downpipes, we can find out what’s behind it.
In a small place like Forest Side, many roofs stand in the open, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Tips from our surveys
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:
- Keep climbers away from the eaves
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Check the loft with care after heavy rain
- Watch for green marks down the brickwork
After any work is done, watch the gutters in the next heavy rain. Water should run to the outlets and away without spilling over, and if it doesn’t, raise it with whoever did the job.
Have your gutters cleared at least once a year or more often near trees. The best time is usually after the leaves have dropped. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.
FAQs for Forest Side
Does being near the coast affect roofs in Forest Side?
Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there is more wind, and more salt in the air. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it typically shows, and Forest Side is within about 4 miles of the coast.
Do you cover smaller places like Forest Side?
Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
How much time does the visit need?
A visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. You will know roughly how long when we arrange the visit.
Can the survey be at a weekend?
Yes, we carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays as well as weekdays. To book, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
What’s in the report?
A written report with photographs, covering the condition of the gutter, the defects we found and what we recommend. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
How experienced are you?
We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years.
Does someone need to be in?
Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you when booking.
What happens if roof problems are left?
It’s easy to put damp down to the wrong cause. When rainwater goods are the source, treating the wall alone will not solve it. Checking the gutters first helps you spend in the right place. Around Forest Side, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.
Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on how big and how high the roof is, access and the package you choose.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
We survey roofs for letting agents and landlords as well as householders. A photo-illustrated written report gives you a clear record of the gutter, which helps you plan work between tenancies.
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.
What we do, step by step
On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely, from ground level, from windows, in the loft space and by drone where it applies. The survey typically takes about 1–2 hours for a house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Older rural homes like those around Forest Side can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
Getting ready for the survey
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Roof by roof
Fascias and soffits
Fascias carry the gutters, so a rotten fascia can let the gutter drop. Damaged or stained boards are recorded.
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
On plastic systems, slipped joints are one of the most common faults. The report notes every one we spot.
Signs you need a gutter survey in Forest Side
Falling leaves are the most common cause of blocked gutters. Every autumn, trees fill gutters with leaves, twigs and seeds, and they collect at the outlets. Once an outlet is choked, the gutter fills and overflows.
People typically book a survey when they’ve noticed one of these:
- Cracked or loose downpipes
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Leaks at the gutter joints
If you look after a building such as Carisbrooke College, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.
