New roof snagging in Forest Side: what you get
We check the coverings, ridges, verges, hips and valleys, along with the flashings and ventilation. We check the underlay at the eaves where it is visible, and we check the gutters too. The report sets out what we found with photographs. Any debris left behind or damage to other parts is recorded too. We survey flashings and valleys, loft conversions and dormers and ridges and verges, and people most often book us about tiles or slates sitting out of line and poorly finished verges.
For a small place like Forest Side, the visit is planned like any other: the journey, parking and access are simply agreed ahead of time. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages with roofs you’d like looked at when booking, so the visit can be planned around them. Whether you are buying or checking new work, the same care goes into it. Weekday and weekend visits are both available.
We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

The survey, step by step
You don’t need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes an hour or two for a typical new house roof, longer where the roof is large or complicated. Around Forest Side, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- First, you tell us what the roofer did and any concerns you have.
- We look at the tiles or slates, ridges, hips and verges from safe vantage points.
- Valleys, flashings, gutters and the underlay at the eaves are looked at.
- We look in the roof space, where there is safe access, and around the property for debris or damage.
- You get a photo report listing the snags we found.
Before the survey
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Find any records of previous roof work

Advice
What we look for on each type of roof
Flashings
Poorly finished flashings often show up on new roofs. We photograph any we find.
Valleys
Offcuts in a valley can hold water. We note anything left behind.
Tips that help
Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:
- Check that gutters weren’t left full of offcuts
- Check ceilings and the loft after heavy rain
- Check the roof before you pay in full
- Keep warranty papers safe
Keep the report with any warranty papers from your roofer. It records the roof’s condition at that point.
Keep paperwork for the new roof together. Add the snagging report to it.
Prices for new roof snagging in Forest Side
A few things affect what a survey costs:
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- House, block, shop or office
There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
What to let us know when you contact us
To price your survey accurately, we’ll ask about:
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
- What made you get in touch
We confirm the price for the job before booking, so you know the cost up front. Prices start from £150, including VAT. For a price for your roof, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Questions from Forest Side
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Forest Side?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
Is the coastal weather around Forest Side hard on roofs?
It can do. Forest Side is within about 4 miles of the sea, and coastal roofs tend to see faster wear on metal parts and more wind lifting loose pieces.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. We check everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.
How long will you be on site?
It typically takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how much new work there is to check. We’ll give you an idea when booking.
Do you check new-build roofs?
Yes. We inspect the roof as far as it can safely be seen and record any snags. Book before the defects period runs out if you can.
What does a new roof inspection cost?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. The price depends on the size of the roof and the access. To get a price, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

What else we do in Forest Side
New roof snagging around Forest Side
The coast is about 4 miles or less from Forest Side, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Corroded clips and nails and lifted ridge pieces are typical of exposed roofs near the sea, which is worth knowing before you buy or pay for new work. Some villages on the Isle of Wight still have thatched roofs, and the whole island is open to sea air and wind. For a purchase or a newly finished roof, the materials decide which details matter most.
The streets around a church such as St. Mary's Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, ask the seller about past roof repairs, because older roofs often have patched valleys, replaced slates and reset ridges. Carisbrooke Castle lies about 1.3 miles south, so building around Forest Side goes back a long way. If you’re buying an older home nearby, it is worth knowing whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before you plan any re-roofing.

For landlords and managing agents
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps when budgeting.
Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget.
Why act early in Forest Side
Small faults on a new roof can grow. A slipped verge tile or a loose flashing may let water through during the first winter. Spotting them early gives the roofer a chance to put them right. In a small place like Forest Side, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
