How a chimney survey works in Hunny Hill
Each stack is looked at from the safest viewpoints available: the ground, nearby windows and higher points, and the loft space where it’s safe. With our Premium Survey, a drone inspection is included where it applies. Where part of a stack cannot be seen, the report says so. Every defect we find is photographed and described in plain words. Typical surveys look at flashings pulling away from the stack and redundant stacks capped without ventilation, across chimney breasts, shared and party-wall stacks and brick chimney stacks.
Houses in smaller places like Hunny Hill can face open ground, where wind and driving rain hit the roof harder. That weather tells first on ridges, verges, chimneys and flashings. Checking those edges shows whether anything has begun to work loose before it lets water in. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.
Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

How the survey changes by roof type
Lead flashings
Flashings can lift in wind or pull out of their mortar joints. Any loose or split flashings are recorded.
Rendered stacks
Water can get in through cracks and then struggle to dry out. We record any cracking and where it is.

Chimney surveys in Hunny Hill: local notes
Hunny Hill is within about 4 miles of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, while driving rain finds any gap. Thatch survives on some older Isle of Wight buildings, and the whole island is open to sea air and wind. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
Trees in and around Seaclose Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters. With Carisbrooke Castle about 1.3 miles south-west, the area around Hunny Hill has a long history. Older homes in the area may have roofs that need matching materials when work is done. Anyone responsible for a site like Hunnyhill Primary School will know that large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.
Hunny Hill is about 1 mile north of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. We cover Hunny Hill and the rest of the Isle of Wight, as part of our work across London and South East England. Across the Isle of Wight, we cover Hunny Hill. We also survey roofs in Portsmouth.

We also cover Parkhurst (1 mile north), Forest Side (1 mile west), Noke Common (1 mile north), Northwood (3 miles north) and Porchfield (3 miles west). Larger places within reach include Ryde (6 miles east), Cowes (4 miles north), Sandown (7 miles south-east), Shanklin (7 miles south-east), Ventnor (9 miles south-east) and East Cowes (3 miles north). As one of the bigger places in the Isle of Wight, Hunny Hill has homes, rented property and businesses of every kind. If you’re somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed, so mention it when you book.

What a chimney survey doesn’t cover
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Keep these in mind:
- Structural calculations for a leaning stack
- Whether a gas appliance or its flue is safe
- Areas we cannot view from safe positions
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will recommend the right survey. What our survey covers.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
FAQs for Hunny Hill
Do you cover smaller places like Hunny Hill?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hunny Hill?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
What insurance do you have?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days as you book.
What do you check on a chimney?
The whole stack, as far as it can be seen safely: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and flashings. We also note leaning, redundant stacks and damp inside.
What does a roof survey cost?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package, confirmed before anything is booked.
Does the weather affect the survey?
A survey can typically go ahead in light rain, and it can even help show where water is getting in. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so we will agree a new date if the weather isn’t suitable.
How it works
It’s useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take an hour or two at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. Parking around Hunny Hill is typically easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.

- We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
