Parkhurst Chimney Survey
A survey of chimney stacks, pots, flashings and flaunching for Parkhurst, from an experienced roof surveyor. Every survey comes with a written report and photos.
- Lifted or split lead flashings
- Bricks with flaking faces
- Worn or missing pointing
What we do, step by step
The visit has one job: to see as much of the chimney stack as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It usually takes between one and two hours for most houses, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Somewhere as small as Parkhurst, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- You tell us how many stacks there are and any damp or problems you’ve noticed.
- Each chimney is viewed from wherever it can be seen safely.
- We check and photograph the pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- Where there is safe access, we look at the stack in the loft and the chimney breasts for damp.
- The findings are written up with photographs and recommendations and emailed to you.
Before we arrive
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Leave side gates unlocked

Advice
Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Parkhurst
A chimney survey looks at the stack and everything around it: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and the flashings at the roof line. Inside, we check chimney breasts and the stack in the loft where it is safe to reach. The findings come in a written report with photos and recommendations. It suits a single stack on a house as well as several on a larger building. We survey chimney pots and cowls, lead flashings and flaunching, and people most often book us about lifted or split lead flashings and signs that a stack is leaning.
In a village or hamlet like Parkhurst, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, frequently with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
The report doesn’t just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

Parkhurst: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Parkhurst is listed?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Is the coastal weather around Parkhurst hard on roofs?
Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there is more wind, and more salt in the air. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it typically shows.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it’s applicable and safe, yes. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.
How do you inspect a chimney without scaffolding?
Each stack is viewed from the safest viewpoints: the ground, nearby windows and higher points, and the loft space. A drone inspection is included in our Premium Survey where applicable. If part of a stack cannot be seen, the report says so.
What should I do with a chimney I do not use?
A redundant chimney needs looking after like any other. If it’s capped without ventilation, damp can build up inside. Our survey records its condition and how it’s capped, so you can decide with a builder what to do.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.
How soon will I get the report?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.
What you can safely check yourself
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Chimney surveys in Parkhurst: local notes
Parkhurst lies within about 4 miles of the sea, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Carisbrooke Castle, about 2.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Parkhurst. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
Anyone responsible for a site like Hunnyhill Primary School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

Practical tips
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Look at the chimneys with binoculars after a storm
- Check that disused chimneys can still breathe
- Have brackets on the chimney checked
- Use the report as a baseline for future checks
Once we’ve been, the findings are written up with photos. It explains the condition of each part of the stack and any damp inside. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Have aerial and dish brackets on the stack checked, and moved if they’re working it loose. Less load on the stack means less strain in wind.
Why get it checked now?
If you are thinking of removing or reducing a stack, it is useful to know its condition first. Changes to stacks in conservation areas or on listed buildings may need consent, so check with them first. In a small place like Parkhurst, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Chimney survey starts from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

What we’re asked to look at in Parkhurst
Flaunching is the mortar bed that holds the pots and throws water off the top. Once it cracks, water gets in and frost makes the cracks bigger. Loose pots can follow.
We’re frequently asked to look at:
- Flashings pulling away from the stack
- Staining on walls around the chimney
- Gaps in the mortar around the pots
- Redundant stacks capped without ventilation
Living close to Seaclose Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.
