Gutter surveys around Morton

Morton lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles. Thatch survives on some older Isle of Wight buildings, and the whole island is open to sea air and wind. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.

If you own a rental within reach of Brading station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. Morton Manor lies about 0.1 miles north-east, so building around Morton goes back a long way. On a period home nearby, the survey separates sound original work from tired later repairs.

Morton is about 1 mile north-east of Sandown, in the Isle of Wight. We carry out gutter surveys in Morton for houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings. Morton is one of the towns and villages in the Isle of Wight we cover. For surveys nearby, see our Portsmouth page.

Surveys in PO36 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If you need a gutter survey at a property on New Road, Wrax Road and Morton Road or a nearby road, we can survey it. You’ll find Morton on the A3055, so it is easy for us to get to. We also cover the places around Morton: Yarbridge (1 mile north-east), Brading (1 mile north-east), Adgestone (1 mile west), Yaverland (1 mile south-east) and Sandown (1 mile south-west). Within a short drive, we also cover Newport (7 miles west), Ryde (4 miles north), Cowes (9 miles north-west), Shanklin (3 miles south-west), Ventnor (6 miles south-west) and East Cowes (8 miles north-west). For harder-to-reach addresses, a little more planning is needed, so mention it when booking.

Gutter survey in Morton

Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Buildings near trees collect more and moss from the roof slopes makes it worse. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water, which outlets and hoppers are choked and whether overflows are working. Photos show each problem clearly. Blocked gutters are easy to put off but it rarely improves. We survey fascias and soffits, eaves gutters and valley gutters, and people most frequently book us about leaves and moss blocking gutters and cracked or loose downpipes.

Older buildings in small places like Morton may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are frequently matched when work is done.

Where we can’t see part of the gutter, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

How it works

On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen. The survey usually takes about 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. In a hamlet or village like Morton, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. First, we agree the areas to focus on.
  2. We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
  3. Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
  4. Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
  5. Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

Before the survey

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
  • Check the loft hatch can be reached

Before and after the survey

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:

  • Look for downpipes coming loose
  • Get the gutters cleaned out every year
  • Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
  • Watch the gutters during heavy rain

Report times depend on the package you choose: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. We email it to you as soon as it is ready.

Have your gutters cleared at least once a year, and more often if trees overhang the roof. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clean gutters can do their job.

Common questions in Morton

I let a flat near Brading station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and what you need.

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Morton?

Generally, yes: wind and salt air take more of a toll near the sea. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it typically shows, and Morton is within about 1 mile of the coast.

Do you survey at weekends?

Yes. Surveys are carried out on weekdays and at weekends. To find a day that suits, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Will the survey check for asbestos?

No, that is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. On buildings from before 2000, we flag materials that could contain it so it can be checked before work starts.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs like sagging are noted, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.

How long does a gutter survey take?

A visit typically takes between one and two hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. We’ll give you an idea when booking.

Do you look in the roof space?

If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that can’t be seen from outside.

What affects the price in Morton

Survey packages start from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
  • Which survey package you book
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

What to tell us when you get in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • What made you get in touch
  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one

Not sure which survey you need? The easiest way is to ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We will explain the options and the price.

What a gutter survey does not cover

Every survey has limits, and it’s better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:

  • Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
  • The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
  • Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

What we check

  • Valley gutters
  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Eaves gutters
  • Fascias and soffits
  • Downpipes
  • Outlets and hoppers

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.

When to book a survey in Morton

Moss grows on many tiled and slate roofs, and rain washes it down into the gutters. Mixed with grit from the roof, it settles as silt that holds water in the gutter and lets weeds take root.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Cracked or loose downpipes
  • Dripping or leaking gutter joints
  • Sagging gutters and loose brackets
  • Blocked outlets and hoppers

Take an older house close to St. Mary's Church: its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
