What a gutter survey looks like in Gaskins
The coast is about 2 miles or less from Gaskins, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. A number of the island’s villages keep thatched roofs on older buildings, and nowhere on the island is far from the sea. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
Take an older house close to St Catherine-by-the-Green: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. If you let a flat or house near Brading station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. Anyone responsible for a site like St Helens Primary School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.
Gaskins is about 3 miles south-east of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. Gaskins gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. Our area takes in places right across the Isle of Wight, large and small. There is also a page for Portsmouth.
We work across the PO33 and PO36 postcode area for gutter surveys. Neighbouring places we cover for gutter surveys include St Helens (1 mile north-east), Brading (1 mile south-west), Yarbridge (2 miles south-west), Morton (2 miles south-west) and Yaverland (2 miles south). Larger places within reach include Newport (8 miles west), Ryde (3 miles north-west), Cowes (9 miles north-west), Sandown (3 miles south-west), Shanklin (5 miles south-west) and Ventnor (8 miles south-west). If you are somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed, so mention it when booking.

Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Gaskins
Some gutters are easy to see from the street but plenty of gutters are tucked away. Valley gutters between slopes, gutters behind parapet walls and box or secret gutters can send water indoors when they overflow. We check them as far as they can be seen safely using vantage points, the roof space and the roof itself where safe. Many leaks indoors start at a hidden gutter. If you’ve noticed rotten fascias or stained soffits and gutters full of debris and silt, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on downpipes, parapet and box gutters and fascias and soffits alike.
Older buildings in small places like Gaskins may be listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Before and after the survey
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:
- Check from ground level or a window, not a ladder
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
- Have overhanging branches cut back
- Look for downpipes coming loose
Once work is carried out, keep an eye on the gutters in the next downpour. Water should run to the outlets and away without spilling over, and if it does not, raise it with whoever did the job.
Have overhanging branches and climbing plants cut back from the roof using someone with the right kit. Fewer leaves in the gutters means fewer blockages.
Common questions in Gaskins
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Gaskins, take more of a battering?
Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there is more wind, and more salt in the air. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it normally shows.
How do I find out if my home in Gaskins is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.
Will I get photos?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.
Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?
Yes. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. To find a day that suits, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
When is the best time for a gutter survey?
Whenever suits you. If water is already spilling over, book sooner rather than later as overflowing water can damage walls.
What will the report tell me?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos. The most urgent items are made clear.

What a gutter survey does not cover
It is useful to know what a survey will not do before you book:
- Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
- Blockages deep inside downpipes
- Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.
What we look at
- Downpipes
- Parapet and box gutters
- Outlets and hoppers
- Fascias and soffits
- Eaves gutters
- Valley gutters
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
How the survey changes by roof type
Fascias and soffits
Some older soffits may contain asbestos. We flag any that could be for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check.
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Metal gutters are common on commercial buildings and some homes. Their joints and outlets still need checking.
How the survey works
Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. Older roofs in small places like Gaskins can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
- We look at hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
How to prepare
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
