Gutter survey in Seaview

Your gutters take the rain from the roof and lead it away from the walls. If they clog, drip or sag, the water ends up somewhere it shouldn’t and that usually means the walls or the inside of the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, from eaves gutters and valleys to outlets, hoppers and downpipes. You get a photo-illustrated written report. Typical surveys look at water backing up from a hidden gutter and cracked or loose downpipes, on downpipes, eaves gutters and parapet and box gutters.

Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are frequently the first to give way.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What happens if roof problems are left?

A written report gives you a dated record of the gutters’ condition, useful when you’re planning maintenance or getting work priced. Without it, you are relying on what can be seen from the pavement. In a place like Seaview, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

Common questions in Seaview

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Seaview?

Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there’s more wind, and more salt in the air. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it typically shows.

I let a flat near Smallbrook Junction station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, that’s a common request. We just need to know who will give access, and we can send the report to you or your agent.

Does the report include photos?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, which makes the report easy to follow.

Are you structural engineers?

No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.

Do you check valley and parapet gutters?

Yes. These gutters often cause leaks indoors when they block so we pay close attention to them. Parts of them may not be visible, and the report says so.

Local roofs in Seaview

Seaview is within about 1 mile of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift. The wider area around Seaview has a long history of building, with Nunwell House about 3.3 miles south-west. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Nettlestone Primary School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. If you own a rental within reach of Smallbrook Junction station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. The streets around a church like St. Peter's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Seaview is about 2 miles east of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. Seaview is part of the area we cover and the surrounding area across London and South East England. Seaview is one of the towns and villages in the Isle of Wight where we work. Portsmouth is in our area too.

Postcode districts we cover here for gutter surveys: PO34. We offer gutter surveys to properties on High Street, Madeira Road and Church Street and the roads around them. Other places close to Seaview include Nettlestone (1 mile south), Spring Vale (1 mile north-west), Pondwell (1 mile west), Puckpool (1 mile west) and Appley (2 miles west). We also work in nearby towns such as Newport (8 miles west), Cowes (9 miles west), Sandown (5 miles south-west), Shanklin (7 miles south-west), Ventnor (10 miles south-west) and East Cowes (8 miles west). If you’re somewhere remote, the survey takes a little more planning, so mention it when you book.

What we can’t see

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Pipes below ground level
  • Gutters out of sight from every safe vantage point
  • Blockages deep inside downpipes

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Valley gutters
  • Downpipes
  • Fascias and soffits
  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Eaves gutters

Tips from our surveys

Small things make a difference. Some pointers:

  • Book gutter clearing once a year, more frequently near trees
  • Do not leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
  • Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
  • Check downpipe clips are holding

How quickly the report arrives depends on the package: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. It’s sent to you by email as soon as it is ready.

Watch your gutters from the ground or a window during heavy rain. Overflows and dripping joints are a sign to act before damage builds up.

Can I check my roof myself?

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

How the survey changes by roof type

Aluminium and other metal gutters

Joints and fixings are the weak points on metal gutters. We record any corrosion or leaks we see.

Box and secret gutters

A box gutter is built into the roof, often behind a parapet, so overflows can end up inside. We inspect them as far as it’s safe to see them.

How it works

It’s useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a hamlet or village like Seaview, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. First, we agree the areas to focus on.
  2. We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
  3. We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
  4. Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
  5. Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
