Gutter survey in Hillway, Isle of Wight
Gutter surveys in Hillway, backed by more than 20 years’ experience. You get a clear report with photographs.
- Brackets that have dropped or snapped
- Joints that drip after rain
- Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
How a gutter survey works in Hillway
Leaves, moss and silt are the usual reasons gutters block. Homes close to trees fill their gutters faster and moss from the roof slopes makes it worse. Our survey shows which gutters are blocked or standing full and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether overflows are working. The photographs show you exactly what we found. It’s an easy job to put off, but they rarely get better. If you’ve noticed water spilling over the gutter edge and valley or box gutters that overflow inside, we can find out what’s behind it, on outlets and hoppers, fascias and soffits and downpipes alike.
Some older homes in villages like Hillway are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are frequently matched when work is done.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

Different roofs, different checks
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Metal gutters can suffer at joints and where different metals meet. We record any corrosion or leaks we see.
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Plastic can become brittle with age and crack. We check the joints, brackets and falls.
Questions from Hillway
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Brading station?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you need.
Is my home in Hillway listed or in a conservation area?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
Are hidden gutters like valleys and box gutters included?
Yes, as far as they can safely be seen. We use the ground, windows, the loft space and the roof where it is safe, and by drone where it’s applicable.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Tell us about it as you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.
Do you survey at weekends?
Yes. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. To find a day that suits, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when booking, as it helps us focus the survey.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
What a survey costs
We confirm the price for the job before booking. These are the things that affect it:
- How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- How big the roof is
Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we will tell you which fits.
What we need to know
These details help when you contact us:
- The property’s address and postcode
- Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
- Dates you are working to, such as exchange
You can call us seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. For a price or to book, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Check the loft with care after heavy rain
- Do not leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
- Book gutter clearing once a year, more often near trees
- Look out for overflows when it pours
If we think the problem lies underground, we will say so, so you can arrange a drain survey. We also note anything else we spot on the roof while we are there.
Watch your gutters from ground level or a window during heavy rain. Overflows and dripping joints are a sign to act before the walls suffer.
Hillway homes and their roofs
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Hillway, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, while driving rain finds any gap. Yaverland Manor, about 1.6 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Hillway. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
Landlords with a home close to Brading station may find that knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints. Anyone responsible for a site like Bembridge Church of England Primary School will know that long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. For an older house near a landmark such as Bembridge Methodist Church, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.
Hillway is about 4 miles south-east of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. We survey roofs in Hillway and the rest of the Isle of Wight, as part of our work across London and South East England. Hillway is one of the towns and villages in the Isle of Wight where we work. There is also a page for Portsmouth.
We cover every part of the PO35 postcode area for gutter surveys. Local streets include Hillway Road and Jenny Streets Lane, and we cover them all. We also cover the places around Hillway: Bembridge (1 mile north-east), Foreland Fields (1 mile north-east), St Helens (2 miles north-west), Gaskins (2 miles north-west) and Yaverland (2 miles south-west). Larger places within reach include Newport (9 miles west), Ryde (4 miles north-west), Cowes (11 miles north-west), Sandown (3 miles south-west), Shanklin (5 miles south-west) and Ventnor (7 miles south-west). If you are somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed, so mention it when you book.

Green spaces nearby include Bembridge Down and Brading Marshes RSPB reserve.
How the survey works
Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. In a small place like Hillway, access is usually the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
Before the survey
- Find any records of previous roof work
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Leave a clear route to the loft

What this survey can’t tell you
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Hidden sections we cannot view safely
- The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
- Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
