Broomhall Storm Damage Roof Report
Storm damage roof reports in Broomhall from an independent, experienced roof surveyor. Over 5,000 surveys and 20+ years behind us.
- Stains appearing after strong winds
- Slates and tiles blown off the roof
- Loose or torn flashings
How the survey works
We check the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit usually takes between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. In a smaller place like Broomhall, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from the ground and the loft can go ahead in most weather.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- We look at the roof from wherever it is safe.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
- You get a written report to pass to your insurer.
Before we arrive
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Keep pets in another room
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

How a storm damage roof report works in Broomhall
The Financial Ombudsman asks three questions when it looks at storm complaints: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. Our report focuses on the second and third points. You or your insurer can check the weather for the date. If you’ve noticed loose or torn flashings and slates and tiles blown off the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
In older homes around places like Broomhall, the underlay may be old bitumen felt, or there may be none at all. Once the slates or tiles let water past, there is little to stop it reaching the ceiling. Whether it’s long-term wear or recent damage makes a difference to what happens next. Wet battens and insulation in the loft are often the first clue.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Broomhall: your questions answered
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Broomhall?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Is Broomhall in the area you cover?
Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Broomhall is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the property.
How long is the visit?
It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. You will then get the report by email.
My storm claim was turned down. What now?
The first step is a complaint to your insurer. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. An independent report can add to your evidence, though we can’t predict the outcome.
Should I go up on the roof to take photos?
Only from ground level or from windows. Never climb onto a roof after a storm. Binoculars can help you see damage from below, and we will record the rest.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only where it’s safe to do so. We inspect what can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.
Different roofs, different checks
Ridge and hip tiles
A lifted ridge tile can let water into the roof. We photograph and describe the damage.
Chimney stacks
Older stacks with worn pointing or cracked flaunching are more likely to suffer. We record both the storm damage and the older wear.
Why get it checked now?
Once the storm has passed, damage that looked minor can let water in for months. Acting quickly usually means less damage overall. On a bungalow or cottage around Broomhall, the roof sits close to the rooms below, so water can show inside quickly once it gets past the covering. Finding the cause first saves a second job inside.
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

Other services in Broomhall
Before and after the survey
A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:
- Take photos from the ground or a window, never by climbing
- Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
- Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
- Keep invoices for temporary repairs
For repair costs, ask a roofer to quote. The report gives them a clear list of the damage.
Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.
What a storm damage roof report looks like in Broomhall
Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from. About 4.4 miles east lies Botleys Mansion, a reminder of how long the area around Broomhall has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.
Landlords with a home close to Sunningdale station may find that a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. If you live near a park such as Silwood Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys.

When to book a survey in Broomhall
Landlords and managing agents book reports to keep a record for owners and insurers. The report can be shared with owners, tenants or insurers.
Here are some of the things we see frequently:
- Flashings pulled away from walls or stacks
- Damaged gutters and fascias
- Damage from fallen branches or debris
- Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
If you look after a building such as Sunningdale School, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.
