Storm damage roof report in Gosport
A storm damage roof report is priced from £150. It is a photo-illustrated written report, sent by email. It does not price the repairs, so you’ll need a roofer’s quote for that. The insurer may still send a loss adjuster of its own. What you get is an independent record of the damage and what seems to have caused it. If you’ve noticed ridge tiles that have come loose and damaged gutters and fascias, we can find out what’s behind it, on slate and tile slopes, ridges and hips and flat roofs alike.
In a town like Gosport, older houses and newer estates leak in different ways. Older roofs suffer slipped slates, worn mortar and tired lead, while later houses can leak at valleys, verges and flat-roofed additions. Knowing the cause tells you what to do next. It also tells you whether the problem is old wear or something more recent.
We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

For landlords and managing agents
Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
What happens on the day
We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Parking in a town like Gosport is usually simple, but let us know if there is a driveway or any restrictions. The inspection covers what can safely be seen from outside, from windows and from the roof space.
- First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
- We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there is access.
- We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
- We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
- We send you a written report with photos, ready to give to your insurer.
Getting ready for the survey
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Leave side gates unlocked
Arrange a survey
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply call 07833 053749 or email us whenever suits you.
Advice
Tips that help
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:
- File receipts for anything you pay for
- Check how your policy defines a storm
- Ask a roofer for emergency temporary protection if water is coming in
- Photograph the damage safely from below
After the visit, we write up the report with photographs of each area of damage. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Store invoices and reports for any roof work. They help show the roof was in good order before a storm.
Common questions in Gosport
Is Gosport in the area you cover?
Yes, Gosport is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Gosport as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Is the coastal weather around Gosport hard on roofs?
Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, while strong wind lifts anything already loose.
How long is the visit?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof, but most surveys take between one and two hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. The written report follows by email.
Can I challenge a declined storm claim?
Raise it with your insurer first. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that does not resolve it. The Ombudsman asks about storm conditions, whether the damage is consistent with a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, if the building owner or managing agent agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.

Wind, rain and roofs in Gosport
Gosport is within about 2 miles of the coast, so storms can arrive with strong gusts off the water. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording, and many treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, though it varies. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.
If you look after a building like Brockhurst Primary School, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside. If you run a business near Tricorn Centre, a leak can close part of a shop or office, so finding the cause quickly matters. If you own a rental within reach of Portsmouth Harbour station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

How the survey changes by roof type
Ridge and hip tiles
Ridge and hip tiles take the full force of the wind. We record any that have lifted, cracked or come away.
Clay and concrete tiles
Tiles without fixings can move more easily in wind. We note what we can see of how tiles are fixed.
Why it’s worth a survey now in Gosport
Damage left open lets in more rain. That can add to the damage and make it harder to separate from the storm. A roofer should deal with emergency protection quickly. Around Gosport, gutters that overflow soak the wall below, and damp follows inside. A slipped tile or worn flashing does the same higher up. Left alone, both only get worse.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 inc. VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
